Salmon Bake Cancelled

The annual neighborhood Salmon Bake, usually taking place the Thursday evening right after Labor day, has been cancelled this year.

Several hundred neighbors and families showed up every year to enjoy the Salmon Bake, along with carnival type games and prizes, face painting, a balloon man, bouncy house, and live music, all benefitting Seattle Parks programming.

Several community businesses, along with the Laurelhurst Community Center and Lifelong Recreation programs partnered to make the even successful, as well High School volunteers.

Cara, Laurelhurst Community Center Recreation Coordinator, told the Laurelhurst Blog:
For the first time in our 54-year history, the Laurelhurst Salmon Bake will be cancelled this year. Due to COVID restrictions on gatherings of over 5 people for the indefinite future, the Salmon Bake is postponed until the Thursday after Labor Day, September 9, 2021.
We miss you, and wish we could see you at the Community Center! As soon as we get the go ahead, we plan to be back offering classes and programs for all ages.

Annual Salmon Bake And Kids Carnival On Thursday At The Park

The popular annual Salmon Bake and Kids Carnival is happening on Thursday, September 7th, at the Laurelhurst Park Center from 5:30-8pm. with music by the Roosevelt Jazz Combo.

Menu for the dinner includes grilled wild salmon, pulled chipotle chicken sandwiches, corn, watermelon, tangy coleslaw, fresh rolls and chocolate brownies.

The salmon dinner is $20, chicken sandwich dinner is $15 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and younger and the hot dog or garden burger dinner is $8.

Cara, Recreation Coordinator, told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff that due to the price of Salmon, the dinner price is the same as last year and can't be lowered.

She added:
Although the cost of Salmon is still on the rise, our fish vendor has agreed to keep our cost for the salmon the same as last year, so we are keeping the price of dinner at that price also. And we unfortunately didn't bring in enough revenue to break even last year and cannot afford to put ourselves in that position again this year.
Also factored into the cost of dinner are the side dishes, entertainment fees, fire permits, health permits and equipment that we have to rent in order to meet Health department guidelines for this event. It is all getting more and more expensive each year unfortunately.    This event is very costly to run with very limited resources and is our only fundraiser for the year. We try to keep costs as minimal as possible.
We hope after all of the expenses are covered, there are proceeds that can go to support the community center programs, special programs such as Spring Egg Hunt and the Summer Kids Series, which don't also break even but are events our neighbors love, and scholarship opportunities for families in our neighborhood.

We are hopeful that community is willing to support us and enjoy a delicious dinner and fun evening for the kids, however if there are families who need assistance with the cost of dinners they are welcome to contact us ahead of time to arrange that. We will be offering senior discounts at the ticketing table as well.

In the future we may need to ask for more community support through sponsorships in order to keep this tradition going.

LEAP (Laurelhurst Earthquake Action Preparedness) started by neighbor John Temple, who has been working with the Laurelhurst Community Club (LCC ) on earthquake preparedness, will have a booth at the event.

Neighbors can learn about getting the neighborhood ready, setting up emergency communications, first responders, setting up triage areas, preparing households in the case of a large earthquake, how to get help and help others. For more information, email LCCearthquake@outlook.com

Salmon Bake Follow-up

Cara Brown, the Laurelhurst Community Center Coordinator, would like to thank the many neighborhood families, community members and volunteers who attended and helped with the 54th annual Salmon Bake.

She said that the proceeds raised will go towards supporting programs at the Community Center as well as Specialized Programs and Lifelong Recreation.

Cara added:
This is our only fundraiser for the Community Center each year and it helps to cover the cost of our Spring Egg Hunt and summer kids shows in the Park which both do not make money.
Our hope is that we can continue to offer these events and activities and our community continues to support our center and programs

New this year was the $5 wristband for participating in all the Carnival games, rather than the single tickets used in previous years. Cara said that the bands seemed to be easier for families as well as for the Community Center.

Cara said that unfortunately the revenue was a little less this year from the event.  One reason was that the cost of salmon from the vendor was a lot higher this year due to a bad harvest season so the salmon dinner price was increased from $15 to $18 to help recoup that cost.

Cara said "We are hoping to lower the cost of the meals for families for next year and perhaps not offer as many sides to help with that."

Community members who are interested in helping to plan next year's Salmon Bake and other community center programs and events, can contact Cara at Cara.Brown@seattle.gov  or by phone at 206-684-7529.

Over 800 Neighbors Showed Up At Recent Salmon Bake In The Park

Folks from Seattle Parks and Recreation includng Magnuson Community Center and the Laurelhurst Advisory Council sent us an update about the recent Salmon Bake held at Laurelhurst Park.

This is the first year the Salmon Bake was not put on by the regular Laurehurst Community Staff, which was disbanded in January due to citywide budget cuts. This year Lifelong Recreation, Specialized Programs, and Laurelhurst Advisory Councils, Magnuson Community Center and Community Kitchens partnered to put on this popular annual event.

The event this year, was nonetheless a huge success with over 800 people attending and over 600 dinners served to the community.

A local jazz band provided lively entertained and the popular Kids Carnival was enjoyed by lots and lots of children.

The generous sponsors include Aljoya Senior Residence (Northgate), Metropolitan Market, Great Harvest Bakery, Full Circle Farms and Taylor Shellfish Company (Melrose Market).

Over 30 community volunteers worked that day to make the event such a big success for the community.

The Paks and Recreation staff would like to give a special thanks to the Laurelhurst Community Club who recruited numerous volunteers.

Last Day To Buy Discounted Salmon Bake Tickets

Families enjoying the salmon bake last year

Today is the last day to buy Salmon Bake tickets and save $2 per adult dinner. Tickets can be purchased at the Laurelhurst Community Center today from 2:30-6pm.

The annual Salmon Bake is happening a little bit later this year, on on September 8th from 5:30-8:30pm at the Laurelhurst Park.

The popular event will feature live music, a kids carnival, salmon and hot dog dinners.

Also volunteers are still needed for this year's Salmon Bake which will be completely volunteer driven, as there is no longer a dedicated Laurelhurst Community Center Staff putting on so many of the fun events the neighborhood enjoyed in the past due to budget cuts.

Cheryl, with Seatte Parks and Recreation, is seeking volunteers to serve as organizers as well as to work at the event,  to ensure that this fun event for all ages is as successful as all the previous years.

Call 386-9106 for more information and to sign up to volunteer.
