City Seeking Proposals For Magnuson Building Spaces

A neighbor would like to share this information from Seattle Parks and Recreation:

Seattle Parks and Recreation seeks proposals for the redevelopment of the Building 47 Theater at Magnuson Park. Proposals are due Wednesday. 

Building 47 was designed and constructed as one structure in 1941 and the building currently contains the theater, a decommissioned indoor swimming pool room, and the Magnuson Community Center. This Request for Proposal (RFP) package seeks submissions regarding the theater and the indoor swimming pool sections of the building only. 

The theater contains approximately 9,130 square feet of space, including a main floor, lobby, stage, lower level (green room), mezzanine and balcony (including projection room). The indoor swimming pool room contains approximately 5,640 square feet of space.    

Parks is seeking proposers who can make a significant capital investment in exchange for a long-term agreement. Proposals should include the management and operation of arts, theater, and film and/or cultural programming that will be open to the public. SPR does not have designated funding for this redevelopment; therefore, proposals should also include a well-defined funding plan to upgrade the building to meet all current code requirements.

Tonight Magnuson Community Center Open House

Magnuson Community Center is having an Open House tonight from 5-8pm. Childcare will be provided.

The information says:

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to an Open House for Magnuson Community Center. 

Please join us to learn about and comment on improvements to the Magnuson Community Center. 

This project will build out the south wing of the community center to allow greater programming capacity. It will also make accessibility improvements to the parking, entry and lobby of the community center. 

Seattle Parks and Recreation staff and the design team from Buffalo Design will be present to talk about the designs and answer questions.  

Residents and neighbors of Magnuson Park are especially encouraged to attend.  

During the Open House the gym will be open for free play time and snacks will be provided. 

The project is funded by Real Estate Excise Taxes, King County Youth and Amateur Sports Grant and Washington State Department of Commerce.

Saturdays Women's Self Defense Class At Magnuson

A neighbor would like to share that Magnuson Community is offering ongoing women's self defense classes for 14 years and older.

The class is 11:30-12:30pm starting Saturday through the month, and another series starting May, June and August.

Learn simple, powerful moves to quickly stop an attacker and protect yourself through self-defense classes,. Strike shock points and escape to safety!

The class is instructed by Oom Yung Doe Martial Arts School.

Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day Tomorrow At Magnuson

 

 

Tomorrow in honor of International Migratory Bird Day, Magnuson Park is having an event called "Migrate to Magnuson Park"  sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation, Magnuson Community Center Nature Programs and the Magnuson Environmental Stewardship Alliance.

The information says:

Bring your family to learn about amazing birds that travel thousands of miles each year to Seattle.

There will be guided walks, habitat bingo and other family-friendly activities beginning at 10 a.m. at the Magnuson Community Center (7110 62nd Avenue NE) 

Talks will be given by renowned bird experts Idie Ulsh and Dennis Paulson.  Go here to sign up for free bird walks and activities.

The Society for Ecological Restoration Northwest Chapter is also having bird walks as part of the celebration which can be found here.

The information says:

Sign up for these is limited, over the 2-3 mile distance some of the walking between points of interest will be a fairly quick pace, and focus will be more on ecological restoration of the park than on birds alone.  They will cover parts of the park less well known than the main wetland area.  Much of this restoration has been done by community based volunteers.

There is also to be at least one additional free walk in the Promontory Point Section of the park from 10-11 which will start from the educational pavilion located on the west side of the park’s most southeastern parking lot (southwest of the boat launch)  and also some shorter ones and other events centered around the community center on 62nd Avenue NE.

Scarecrow Mini Fest At Magnuson On Saturday

 

 

On Saturday from 11-2pm Oct. 5th from 11-2pm, the Magnuson Community Center will be having a free family event called the  "Scarecrow Mini-Fest."

 

The information says:

Our Scarecrow Mini Fest features live bluegrass music, a scavenger hunt in the Community Garden Orchard, Children’s Garden exploration and nature art, garden games, kids activities, a ride-on kiddie tractor corral, and of course, making scarecrows!

You bring the clothes, pillow case for the head and we supply the straw and frame materials. Put your scarecrow on display during the Mini Fest and see if you win the grand prize!  Cost for making a scarecrow is $10.

Magnuson Community Center’s Grand Opening Of New Tot Drop-in Center Tomorrow

Magnuson’s Tot Drop-in Center is having their Grand Opening tomorrow at 10:30am with Caspar Babypants performing.

The information says:

Come and celebrate Magnuson’s new and revised weekly drop-in activities for tots that include the Playpark, Playcenter, Babyland, and the Tot Rod Zone, located at the Magnuson Community Center.

Magnuson’s Indoor Playpark and Playcenter opens at 9:30am with lots of toys, face painting, balloon animals, crafts, a big jumpy house, popcorn, and more!

UW Dance Team Holding All Ages Workshop At Magnuson On Saturday



The University of Washington Dance Team is holding a dance workshop on Saturdayfrom 10am-4pm at the Magnuson Community Center.

The information says:

Members of the dance team will be teaching young dancers how to show their spirit through hip hop, jazz dance, bow making, and more. It is designed for all levels and abilities from kindergarten through 8^th grade.

Roller Derby League Tournament, Building 30
The best roller derby leagues in the Northwest will compete in a tournament to qualify for the national championships of roller derby, presented by USA Roller Sports (USARS) .  Tournaments begin at 8 a.m. daily and tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 a day or $25 for a week-end  pass.

The current national champions are Washington’s own Oly Rollers, will defend their title against Antagonist Roller Derby, Seattle Sonic Boom, the Atomic City Rollergirls, Port T’Orchard Roller Derby, Toxic 253, and the Underground Derby League. USARS is recognized by the International Olympic Committee, and the winner of this tournament will qualify for the National USARS Championships, to be held in Tulsa, OK; Oct. 25-27.

Sign Up For Kids Basketball And Golf Starting Next Week At Magnuson Community Center





Co-ed basketball for 6-7 years old starts next week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5pm at the Magnuson Community Center and runs through March 28th.
 

Some of the skills taught will be dribbling, passing, shooting, defense and offense.

The teacher is Linda Slater, a local coach who has 20 years experience with AAU at the elite/select level for both boys and girls of young ages and skill levels. The cost is $95.

Also starting next Wednesday from 4-5pm at Magnuson Community Center are golf lessons 5-7 and 8-10 year olds through March 27th.
 

The “SNAG” golf program is for kids who are “starting new at golf" and is modified version of golf with special equipment that contains all the elements of regular golf such as full shots, pitching, chipping, and putting.

Sign Up Today For Triatholon Camp At Magnuson

Triathlon Camp (USAT Junior) starts on Monday from 1:30-4pm at  Magnuson Park for ages 8-12.

The information says:

Participants must have a bike in good working condition and be able to swim 25 yards.  Bring a bike, helmet, swimsuit, towel, goggles, water bottle and running shoes. 

The camp is coached by Sara Graham (USAT certified). The cost is $111.

Kids Chef Camp Starting Next Week At Magnsuon

Karla, Recreation, Coordinator at Magnuson Community Center, sent us email to let the neighborhood know about a Chef Camp starting Monday for a week from 10-1pm for ages 8-12 years old.

"Create culinary masterpieces with guest chefs and discover a wide variety of foods from around the world and our own back yard" is the class description.
