Rudy's Barbershop Opening In August

Rudy's Barbershop is opening another location just a few doors up from St. Helens and Great State Burger (3600 NE 45th Street) sometime in August.

Ron Sher, the building owner, told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff that it will be located in the one story building, which is the middle of the three buildings that he owns. Rudy's Barbershop will be the only tenant in that building. 

This middle building (3622 NE 45th Street) is currently being remodeled (previous tenant was Sandra  Lindsay Design) and sits in between St. Helens and Great State Burger restaurants (previously Coffee Crew for many years, then Bill the Butcher) and the Laurelhurst Professional Center (3626 NE 45th Street).  

A new restaurant will eventually be going in where Ciao Bella was, Sher told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff, on the bottom level of the Laurelhurst Professional Center, also currently being renovated.

He said: "We're working with some exciting users at the restaurant, but it's too early to disclose."

In January 2016 Ron told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff:

Our intent is to remodel all of buildings including the Laurelhurst Professional Center.  We plan to extend the depth of the single story building, remodel the store fronts and to add a partial second story. We are also planning to remodel the Professional Center replace the restaurant and remodel the patio.

 

Nearby barbers include the Laurelhurst Barber (3613 NE 45th Street), which has been in that location for decades.  One client told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff last year that "the old barbershop may not keep long hours but there are well over 100 loyal customers from the neighborhood."

A few doors down is Epic Barber (3517 NE 45th Street), who last year lost their popular barber, Heather, and is still owned and operated by Heather's sister and brother-in-law.  

Sher is founder and CEO of Sher Partners, a family real estate development, management and investment firm.  He is also the founder and majority owner of Third Place Company, the parent company of Third Place Books and the Honey Bear Bakery, with locations in Lake Forest Park, Bryant and Seward Park. Sher was involved in revitalizing the Lake Forest Park Shopping Center and Bellevue's Crossroads Mall in the late 1980's. 
    

 

 

Tully's Closes, Sunrice To Close, Other Spaces Still Sit Empty After Months

Many Laurelhurst Blog readers have emailed the Laurelhurst Blog Staff about Tully's suddenly closing last Sunday.

One neighbors said:

As a long time Tully's customer I was saddened to learn that it had closed. I was told by employees the rent had tripled.  No word what is planned for the space.

 

The Laurelhurst Blog Staff spoke with a Tully's who said that the landlord "wanted to triple our rent." He added that Kinko's will most likely be downsizing in the same space.

King County Records show that the building, appraised at $3,152,600 is owned by William Guimont of Gemo-Guimont LLC.

That appears to be the only building he owns in the area as Property Development Associates (PDA), a division of Safeway that focuses on the leasing and disposition, owns the building where Burgermaster is.

Nearby Baskin-Robbins has sat empty since September of last year. 

The manager and also son of the owner, told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff that the new landlord "wanted to raise the rent by more than 50% with all costs included."








So they had to walk away from the business his family has owned for 15 years, and in which it has been located for 40 years .  

Word on the street is that the rent is $7,000 a month for the space. One neighbor said "Probably the only business that can afford that is Starbuck's."

Also empty is the space that used to house Chloe Bistro which closed in January of last year.  Before that, Union Bay Café was there for a number of years.

The landlords, the Spigers, have told potential renters that they only want offices in that space and no more restaurants.

The Spigers own the entire building, which also houses Epic Barber, a variety of offices and businesses.

The Sunrice Café is also in that building and the Laurelhurst Blog Staff has heard that it will be closing very soon, because the rent has suddenly increased.

Blog readers speculate that these spaces will continue to be vacant as the "loss of rent is a tax write-off so no money is lost" one resident said. "Landlords can afford to have their spaces sit empty as long as they want." 

A reader who is a Tax Preparer and Business Development Specialist, wrote in and said:

Landlords still have to pay property taxes and other costs. They can, in some cases, take the loss generated by the property as a reduction in taxable income and, thus, get some tax savings, but that's not the case for most property owners because their incomes are too high for that.

Undoubtedly, most property owners would prefer to have tenants and it may be worth their time and lost rental income to wait for one that will pay a higher rate or to redevelop the property.

 

 

Epic Barber Shop Offering Discounted Kids Haircuts With Food Donation

Epic Barber Shop (3517 NE 45th Street) and the Food Driving Box program are partnering to raise awareness and solicit donations of bright red food this month for the 2nd annual "Fill Your Heart and Food Driving Box Campaign" to restock Seattle’s 27 Food Banks.

Epic Barber Ship is offering $2 off kids haircuts as well as a Valentine's Day treat bag, when a can, box, or carton of non-perishable food is brought in. 

Free Food Driving Boxes can be picked up at the Laurelhurst Community Center on Mondays 9-2pm or at any of Seattle’s 27 Food Banks.

Once the box is filled with red packaged non-perishable food, it can also be dropped off to the University District Food Bank or any food bank in the area.

Chloe Bistro Closes (Next Door To Epic Barber Shop)

 

 



Chloe Bistrot (3515 NE 45th Street), which opened in June of 2010, closed recently. 

It was owned by Laurent Gabrel, who also owns Voila! French Bistrot and La Cote Creperie in Madison Park. 

Gabrel had completely remodeled the space from the previous restaurant, Enotria, which was there about a year and closed in February of 2010.

And before that the popular Union Bay Café was in the space for many years until it closed in June of 2007.

The 2,300 square foot restaurant was up for sale for $129,000 for several months around September of this year and was listed in BizBuySell, Business Week and LoopNet, advertising it as sub-lease with "low, low, low rent." and "great potential for growing much much more $$$s "

A frequent diner at Chloe told the Blog Staff that the restaurant broke its lease which was supposed to go until 2020 because the restaurant was "going belly-up."

He added that he had heard that the landlord does not want another restaurant in that space.

He also added that he believes that Epic Barber, next door, will be expanding into the back area of the former restaurant, where the chef office used to be.

There are two signs on the space - one a "For Rent" sign giving a phone number, and the other listing the details of various spaces available in the building.

Epic Barber Collecting Donations For Westside Baby

Epic Barber Shop Collecting Diapers, Clothes, Toys All Week For "Joy Drive"



Epic Barber Shop (3517 NE 45th Street) is hosting a " Joy Drive" for WestSide Baby, a nonprofit organization that collects diapers and gently used items for children and babies and distributes them free of charge to families in the Seattle area until December 21.

Heather and Rob, the owners of Epic, the popular neighborhood family barber shop, told us that they are collecting toys, diapers, car seats, strollers, and clothes (newborn through 12).  A full list of most needed items is on their website.

The owners told us that they have been supporting WestSide Baby for over six years because they provide children with a healthy supply of diapers, warm clothes, and safe equipment to grow up strong.  Diapers are not covered by food stamps, WIC, or any other government assistance and one in three families struggle to afford an adequate supply of diapers.

WestSide Baby, founded in 2001, has distributed over $10.25 million in essential items to children in King County and  serve more than 22,000 children annually.  Last year WestSide baby helped over 24,000 children in Seattle

"With so many families struggling to make ends meet a toy for Christmas is not high on the list of necessities.  We really appreciate all the donations we've received over the last few years from the Laurelhurst community," the owners told us.

 

 

Epic Barber Hosting Diaper Drive This Week



Epic Barber Shop (3517 NE 45th Street) is hosting it's 4th annual Stuff the Bus diaper drive for Westside Baby through Friday.

WestSide Baby is a  nonprofit organization that collects diapers and gently used items for children and babies and distributes them free of charge to families in the Seattle area. Annually they serve more than 24,000 children in King County. They have distributed nearly $12 million in essential items to local children since being founded in 2001. 

Epic Barber told us that the most needed items are newborn diapers, size 4 and 5 diapers, pull ups, wipes and hygiene items (baby shampoo, lotion, diaper cream).

 

Get A Haircut Wednesday For A Cause At Epic Barber Shop

On Wednesday from 10-7pm, Epic Barber Shop (3517 NE 45th Street) will be taking part in "Cuts for a Cure" with all proceeds from haircuts going to Autism Speaks, as well as "lighting it up blue" for World Autism Awareness Day.

Light It Up Blue, in its fourth year, is a global initiative to help raise awareness and shine light on autism.  And Heather's (one of the stylists) son has autism so she told us "we have a vested interest in this fundraiser."

Epic Salon will be accepting donations with or without a haircut.

"Please stop by and light it up blue with us to support this amazing cause!" the staff told us.

The owners wrote to us:

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States.  Every 11 minutes a family gets a diagnosis of autism.  1 in 88 children is on the autsm spectrum.  Less than 1% of government research funding goes to autism.

We would like to invite the community to come support a cause that is not only a growing concern but one that is dear to our hearts as a member of our family is autistic.

Epic Barber Shop Hostling Diaper Drive This Week

Epic Barber Shop (3517 NE 45th Street), is celebrating its first anniversary tomorrow, and the crew would like to thank the Laurelhurst community for supporting them in their first year of business by inviting everyone to stop by for an anniversary cupcake.

Epic Barber Shop, located next door to Chloe Bistrot, is a family run business and caters to all ages. Heather, one of the owners, used to be a popular stylist at nearby Starline Barber in Bryant, where she worked previously. 

Haircuts are $13 for kids that are ten and under as well as seniors 65 and over. And for adults $18 for short hair and $22 for long hair.

Barber Pole Stolen Outside Of Epic Barber Shop

We received this email from Heather, with the Epic Barber Shop (3517 NE 45th Street):

As of Tuesday of this week, we noticed our barber pole missing.  It had been cut and forcefully removed from our building.

We would like to offer free haircuts for a year (12 a year, one a month) for any information on the recovery of the pole or leading to the arrest of the vandal, or thief(s).

We are very upset to think that someone possibly from our community could do something like this.
