Help Today And Saturday Build Rooftop Garden For Food Bank

Several neighbors submitted this information to share with the community about a family friendly event helping the Food Bank at nearby Center For Urban Horticulture Center, near the area marked UW Farm.

This is such a terrific organization! The location to help is right at the Horticulture Center.  So it's  very convenient for Laurelhurst neighbors to "lend a hand".

In only one week’s time, 4000 milk crates will be hoisted onto the roof top of our new food bank home where they will begin growing fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for our many food bank customers. Before this can happen, we need to finish getting the milk crates prepped. To do this, we need your help. Please join us for one of our upcoming work parties: Wednesday, April 27th from 4pm - 8pm Saturday, April 30th from 9am - noon Saturday, April 30th from noon – 3:00pm Wear comfortable and weather appropriate clothes because we will be outside, rain or shine and bring work gloves if you have them. You don’t need to bring any tools, we have what you need. And we’ll have some drinks and snacks too. Please RSVP so we know to expect you.  Once it’s all done, this is going to be a pretty cool garden. Epic Barber Shop Offering Discounted Kids Haircuts With Food Donation

Epic Barber Shop (3517 NE 45th Street) and the Food Driving Box program are partnering to raise awareness and solicit donations of bright red food this month for the 2nd annual "Fill Your Heart and Food Driving Box Campaign" to restock Seattle’s 27 Food Banks.

Epic Barber Ship is offering $2 off kids haircuts as well as a Valentine's Day treat bag, when a can, box, or carton of non-perishable food is brought in. 

Free Food Driving Boxes can be picked up at the Laurelhurst Community Center on Mondays 9-2pm or at any of Seattle’s 27 Food Banks.

Once the box is filled with red packaged non-perishable food, it can also be dropped off to the University District Food Bank or any food bank in the area.

Jennifer,  a Laurelhurst resident and Food Driving Box Founder, would like to share that "the 2nd annual "Fill Your Heart and Food Driving Box Campaign" is happening now to restock Seattle’s 27 Food Banks with bright red food this month. 

Free Food Driving Boxes can be picked up at the Laurelhurst Community Center on Mondays 9-2pm or at any of Seattle’s 27 Food Banks.

Once the box is filled with red packaged non-perishable food, it can be dropped off to the University District Food Bank or any food bank in the area.

 

This is a really fun and safe way to get kids thinking about giving in our community," Jennifer told us.

She added "fill your box with non-perishable foods and help make this Valentine’s sweeter for our neighbors in need."

 

 

 

Fifth Graders Holding Food Drive At Laurelhurst Elementary School

 

 
The Fifth Graders at Laurelhurst Elementary School are currently having a food drive as a service project this month.
 
The three fifth grade classrooms with teachers Mr. Howard, Ms. Dublin and Ms. Jambor’s have also each been making class visits to the University District Food Bank.

Starting today and ending on the 18th, Laurelhurst Elementary School is collecting food for the University Food Bank. If you choose to participate, please bring non-perishable food to the front hall in the school. The Fifth Grade will also be going on a field trip to the food bank and will learn about what food banks do, why they do it, and how we can help the people in need. The fifth graders will also get experience helping the food bank, by bagging food and donating the food our school collected.

UDistrict Food Bank Sets Up Unique Program To Include Nearby Neighborhoods

Evan, from the University District Food Bank, sent us email about a new grocery delivery program launched last month, for surrounding neighborhoods, including Laurelhurst. 

This goal of this program is "to reach homebound seniors who are in need of food with groceries delivered to their door," Evan says.

He says they are in the process of trying to get the word out to the community about this new opportunity, not only to take on new clients but also to find volunteer drivers to help make the deliveries, which go out on Wednesdays.
