Rudy's Barbershop Opening In August

Rudy's Barbershop is opening another location just a few doors up from St. Helens and Great State Burger (3600 NE 45th Street) sometime in August.

Ron Sher, the building owner, told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff that it will be located in the one story building, which is the middle of the three buildings that he owns. Rudy's Barbershop will be the only tenant in that building. 

This middle building (3622 NE 45th Street) is currently being remodeled (previous tenant was Sandra  Lindsay Design) and sits in between St. Helens and Great State Burger restaurants (previously Coffee Crew for many years, then Bill the Butcher) and the Laurelhurst Professional Center (3626 NE 45th Street).  

A new restaurant will eventually be going in where Ciao Bella was, Sher told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff, on the bottom level of the Laurelhurst Professional Center, also currently being renovated.

He said: "We're working with some exciting users at the restaurant, but it's too early to disclose."

In January 2016 Ron told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff:

Our intent is to remodel all of buildings including the Laurelhurst Professional Center.  We plan to extend the depth of the single story building, remodel the store fronts and to add a partial second story. We are also planning to remodel the Professional Center replace the restaurant and remodel the patio.

 

Nearby barbers include the Laurelhurst Barber (3613 NE 45th Street), which has been in that location for decades.  One client told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff last year that "the old barbershop may not keep long hours but there are well over 100 loyal customers from the neighborhood."

A few doors down is Epic Barber (3517 NE 45th Street), who last year lost their popular barber, Heather, and is still owned and operated by Heather's sister and brother-in-law.  

Sher is founder and CEO of Sher Partners, a family real estate development, management and investment firm.  He is also the founder and majority owner of Third Place Company, the parent company of Third Place Books and the Honey Bear Bakery, with locations in Lake Forest Park, Bryant and Seward Park. Sher was involved in revitalizing the Lake Forest Park Shopping Center and Bellevue's Crossroads Mall in the late 1980's. 
    

 

 

Long-Time Laurelhurst Barber And Style Shop Going Under New Ownership, Longer Hours And "Freshened Up" Decor

 

 

The Laurelhurst Barber (3613 NE 45th Street)  appeared to be closed, week before last, with brown paper covering the windows and then last Thursday, October 9th, the paper was off and a neighbor said it looked as if it had re-opened.   

One of the long-time owners of Laurelhurst Barbar, Edward Waage, passed away in February of last year and his partner, Mike, continued to run the Barber Shop. 

Two long-time customers, one who has been going to Laurelhurst Barber for about as long as the Barber Shop has been open, over 40 years, gave us this update:

After Ed died a few years ago, Mike, the second barber has kept it going.  The hours are different.  Mike is usually there Tuesdays - Fridays from about 7 am to about 11 am for appointments ( a large group ) and then on Saturdays  from 6:30-10, first come first serve.  

Two barbers who have single shops up north, 65^th and 95^th (I think) have combined to buy Ed out.   The buyout will go over the next year.  Ed will stay there for a year and as long after as he wants.   

The new guys have met with the landlord who indicated she will lease the shop to  them when Ed’s lease is up in a year.  In the meantime, the two new guys are freshening the place up – there will be 3 chairs, (2 of which are much newer);  tile the floor; add new lighting and paint the walls.  I think they will add a big wall TV on the back wall.  

It was a very nostalgic barber shop that probably had not had anything done to it in at least 20 or 30 years  so a ‘freshen up ‘ will be nice.  But the old flavor will be gone. 

The hours will expand.   Mike will continue to be there the same hours he has been.  The new guys will then come in at 11am and stay until late afternoon.  I have briefly met the new guys and they seem nice and friendly.

Laurelhurst Barber is a different barber than Epic Barber, just a few doors down in the next block.
 

 

 

Reader Sends In New Hours For Laurelhurst Barber Shop

A reader sent us the hours of the Laurelhurst Barber Shop (3613 NE 45th Street), located in Laurelhurst for the past 41 years, where Mike, the owner, is still cutting hair.

In February longtime barber Ed, who co-owned the shop, passed away    Ed cut four generations of hair for some families in the neighborhood, as one reader told us and "was well known and universally loved in the Laurelhurst and adjacent neighborhoods."

Mike's hours are by appointment Tuesday through Friday mornings and walk-ins Saturdays from 7am-noon.

Edward Waage, who co-owned Laurelhurst Barber (3613 NE 45th Street) for 43 years, passed away recently of cancer shortly after retiring.

One reader wrote to us that he served four generations of some families in the neighborhood and added "He was well known and universally loved in the Laurelhurst and adjacent neighborhoods."

Another reader wrote that he "He was a great guy. His passing is very sad. Ed was something of an institution in our neighborhood, at least for many of the men."

Another reader told us that her husband went to Ed and that he always came home with great stories about the neighborhood. She added that "He was loved."

In a post we did from March of last year, a reader said that "The ‘old barbershop’ may not keep long hours but there are well over 100 loyal customers from the neighborhood."

Ed, the "Laurelhurst Barber" died recently ward Dwaine WAAGE, Sr. Edward Dwaine Waage Sr., 72, was born August 14, 1939 in Spokane, Washington, but he always said his life began when he rededicated it to Jesus Christ in his 30's. He leaves behind his wife of 42 years, Marsha, and his children, Ed Jr., Noelle and Sara.

Ed co-owned Laurelhurst Style and Barber Shop along with his good friend, Michael Platz for 43 years. Ed was also active in his local church and served in various positions. He was a man after God's own heart.

A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, March 3rd 1:00 pm at Crosspointe Church in Bothell. Donations can be made in Ed's honor to charitywater.org.
