The annual Spring Egg Hunt is coming up on Saturday starting at 10am sharp at the Laurelhurst park for ages 12 and under. 

Over 4,000 plastic eggs stuffed with toys, stickers and candy will be scattered, as well as treats. Some eggs will have a special ticket to win a prize basket or other surprise. Kids are divided by age group. Following the event there will be field games.

The Laurelhurst Community Center is looking for students and community members to help hide eggs, hold age group signs and direct people at our annual egg hunt on April 20th from 8:30-11am.   

If you are unable to volunteer but would still like to help, please donate candy and plastic eggs on  Mondays and Wednesdays 9am-8pm or Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 9am-2pm.

Spring Egg Hunt Draws Hundreds Of Kids

Cara Brown, Recreation Coordinator, at the Laurelhurst Community Center, shared this information about Saturday's egg hunt:

Hundreds of kids along with their families enjoyed the morning hunting for eggs, playing field games such as the bunny hop and egg relay, and visiting with neighbors.  

Kids in 4 age groups dashed for 4500 eggs, filled by generous volunteers and staff, and scooped up close to 1000 other goodies. 

Thank you to everyone who supported our event with donations, canned food and supporting our bake sale fundraiser. 

I would also like to thank the 30 teens who volunteered to help during the event.  We cannot offer these events without such support.

The annual Spring Egg Hunt is coming up on March 26 at 10am sharp at Laurelhurst park for ages 12 and under.

And to make it as successful as past years, Cara Brown, the Recreation Coordinator, is soliciting donations of candy and small items for the 4,000 plastic eggs as well as for the prize baskets.

"We are expecting several hundred kids to participate again this year and would like to distribute enough eggs for all the kids to enjoy!" Cara told us.

Cara said that candy donations should be individually wrapped and fit in the plastic eggs.   Items for the prize baskets for ages 3 and under should not pose a choking hazard and for ages 4-10 could be such items as chocolate bunnies, sidewalk chalk, stuffed bunnies, any leftover birthday party prizes that people may have around the house such as bubbles, etc. 

Donations should be dropped off by March 23rd to the Community Center. Hours are Monday and Wednesday between 9-7pm and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9-2pm.

Cara also is looking for volunteers to help at the event between 8:30am-11:30am.  Interested high School students will get volunteer credit.

"Please spread the word to friends and family who may also be interested in volunteering for this fun event!" Cara told the Blog Staff.

Spring Egg Hunt A Success Thanks To Volunteers And Great Community Participation



Cara with the Laurelhurst Community Center sent this follow-up message about this year's Spring Egg Hunt:

Thank you to the several hundred community members who attended our annual spring egg hunt on April 4th, at the Park.  We lucked out with a beautiful day and a great turn out of kids and families.   

Thank you to those families who donated candy and/or eggs.  Over 4,000 eggs were scattered among four age groups, which only took seconds to be swooped up by many little hands!  

A big thank you to all our volunteers and staff for taking the time to come and help make our event a success!   This event relies largely on a great group of volunteers, some veterans and some new, and of course our hard working staff as well.  You left big smiles on the faces of a lot of kids and families and made fun memories for them! 

We hope everyone enjoyed the event and look forward to next year!

Neighborhood Spring Egg Hunt Draws Big Crowd





Last Sunday's Spring Egg Hunt was a big success with over 4000 eggs scattered through out the park along with loose candy and treats for kids up to age twelve and over 450 people that showed up.

Cara, Recreation Coordinator, told us that they were able to stuff 1,000 more eggs than last year due to the numerous volunteers and staff as well as the neighborhood residents who donated candy and eggs. 

 

Maxwell Meals donated all the baked goods which resulted in a successful bake sale fundraiser.  Cara told us that the funds will be used to help off-set the cost of the egg hunt and to support other community center programs.

 

Jennifer, with Food Driving Box, was also pleased with the hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food that was donated and later delivered to the University District Food bank to feed hungry neighbors in our community.

"Thank you to everyone and we look forward to next year's egg hunt!" Cara told us.

Over 900 People Attended Recent Spring Egg Hunt





Another Neighborhood Egg Hunt is over. And this year was the most well-attended, with kids dashing for candy and eggs and filling their baskets. Unfortunately it was reported some kids left empty handed, though they did get to meet the Easter Bunny.

Cara, Community Center Recreation Coordinator, wrote to us:

An estimated 350 kids were dashing for eggs this year, with an estimated 900 people in total attendance! 

Thank you to the 19 volunteers (11 of which were teens) who came day of to help set up, facilitate and clean up. Thank you to all our generous neighbors who donated bags of candy and eggs and thank you to the Specialized Programs Adult group who volunteered to stuff over 4,000 plastic eggs! Great teamwork resulted in a special day for the families in our community! 

This year, an effort was made to create aisles in between the age groups so that the kids could spread out a bit better in hopes that all kids had an equal chance at finding eggs and there was an additional 1,000 eggs scattered compared to last year’s count. 

Goodie bags and treat bags, donated by Jeannie Hale of the Laurelhurst Community Club, were provided upon request for those who did not manage to find many eggs.

Thank you to the many community members who came and supported this event. Any feedback and/or offers to volunteer for next year’s event are always welcome!

The annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Laurelhurst Park is coming up on March 30th at 10am.

Cara, Recreation Coordinator, let us know that over 300 kids are expected who will hunt for roughly 3,000 candy filled eggs.

She writes:

The Laurelhurst Community Center is now accepting individually wrapped candy donations to stuff into plastic eggs. 

If you are interested in donating, please drop candy off at the Laurelhurst Community Center (4554 NE 41^st Street) between  9-2pm Monday –Friday.  

Donations are needed by March 20^th for the egg stuffing party! Thank you for your support!

Last Saturday's Spring Egg Hunt A Success

Cara, Laurelhurst Community Center Recreation Coordinator, sent us a follow-up email about last Saturday's Spring Egg Hunt - lots of exicted kids and lots of great volunteer helping to make the annual event a success:

A HUGE thank you to the many community members and volunteers who donated candy, plastic eggs, baked goods as well as personal time to make the Laurelhurst Egg Hunt a fun and successful event!  Given that the Community Center has limited funds and personnel, the community once again stepped up to make a memorable day for the families of the Laurelhurst neighborhood. 

An estimated 300 kids along with their families enjoyed the mad dash for candy filled eggs and other goodies scattered throughout the park.  It was great to see neighbors enjoying the parks with their friends and family after the hunt was over as well. 

The Community Center also hosted a very successful bake sale to raised funds to help support families in need of scholarships.  Thank you to those who graciously donated to that cause.

Easter Egg Hunt A Big Success Thanks To Neighborhood Volunteers and Now Time To Volunteer For Putting On The Summer Salmon Bake

It was a big turnout for the popular neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday morning. Kids gathered by age group to find the many, many eggs that the Easter Bunny had hid in the park.

Many lucky kids found a paper with "prize" or "basket" written on it in their eggs and exchanged those papers for cool prizes and colorful baskets filled with toys and goodies. Kids squealed with excitement opening each and every egg and being suprised by what was in there.

The Easter Bunny walked around shaking hands with kids and was in many a picture.

Thanks to Cheryl and David, with the Seattle Parks Department, for coordinating the Egg Hunt. And to the many neighbors who dropped off candy and toys to fill the eggs with and also to the 12 or so volunteers who showed up early that morning to make the event such a great community event for the neighborhood.

Inside the Community Center was a letter from the Community Center Staff saying "We are pleased to offer the egg hunt this year and could not have one it without the community support and donations. Thank you to all who contributed and to the volunteers who stepped up."

Despite the budget cuts to the Community Center the neighborhood rallied and made it just as fun as ever.

David's next big project is gaining support to continue the annual summer Salmon Bake "with some new twists"the letteer said. And to do it, community involvement will again be needed, starting with putting together a planning group right away.

Regarding what the status of the Community Center, the letter said "The staff of Laurelhurst Community Center wants to let you know that we are still open and programming and activites are still happening. We need the community to check us out."

"There is also availabe space and time for more programs too but we need your support, input and involvement. We need community members to participate on the Laurelhurst Advisory Council."

Easter Egg Hunt Saturday At 10AM, Volunteers And Candy Still Needed

This Saturday at 10am sharp is the popular Spring Egg Hunt at the park, a fun event for families in the neighborhood to come together.

Last year's Easter Egg Hunt, traditionally held on the grass in front of the Laurelhurst Community Center was well attended with over 200 kids.

This year, Cheryl, a recreation specialist with Seattle Parks and Recreation, is coordinating the event with limited staff and limited funds.

She told us that she still needs more volunteers to help make this run smoothly and be successful.  She added that this is a great event for High School students who need volunteer hours.

Cheryl asks that volunteers meet at the Laurelhurst Community Center at 8:30am and they should be finished by 11am.

Cheryl told us that still needs more candy to fill the eggs. Donations should be individually wrapped candies that will fit in plastic eggs. Candy can be dropped off at the Laurelhurst Community Center during open hours (which are today through Friday, 9:30am to 12:30pm and today and tomorrow 2:30 – 6:15pm) and indicate they are for the egg hunt.

And she added "My biggest concern is that we have appropriate candy/prizes for the very little children that would not pose choking problems, etc. So if you could ask for people to donate candy/ small prizes appropriate for ages 2 and under."

Cheryl said she also needs more items that can be used for prizes such as chocolate bunnies, sidewalk chalk, stuffed bunnies, any leftover birthday party prizes that people may have around the house such as bubbles, etc. for ages 1 to 10 years old. Volunteers will be putting together prize packages or baskets for those who find the "prize eggs," probably 3 – 5 for each age group.

Spring Egg Hunt At The Park Is On This Year!

We received an email from Cheryl, a recreation specialist with Seattle Parks and Recreation, sending us the good news that the annual Easter/Spring Egg Hunt will still take place this year on April 23rd at 10am sharp.

But Cheryl needs the community's help to put this on and make it a success, as Dena and her staff are no longer working at the Community Center due to budget cuts.

"In order to do this with a limited staff and limited funds, we are asking for community contributions of individually wrapped candies and/or small prizes to be dropped off at the community center during regular hours of business, and also for volunteers to help prepare for the event, as well as help the day of the event!" Cheryl says in her email.

Community Center Easter Egg Hunt Brought Out About 200 Eager Kids

Yesterday's Easter Egg Hunt on the grass in front of the Laurelhurst Community Center was well attended with about 200 kids and probably about that many parents as well totalling about 400 people, according to the Laurelhurst Community Center Staff.

Kids found tons of brightly colored eggs with chocolates and other surprises in them. And also on the ground were lots of fun surprises - jump ropes, playdough, bubbles, wind up toys and lots of other great surprises put out by the staff. Kids were very excitedly heard telling eachother what they found and trying to make trades.

The Easter Bunny was of course very popular with parents swarming around to get pictures of him and his basketand carrot with their kids.

Inside, the staff had prepared very fun and interesting crafts for the kids of all ages. One was a plastic yellow cup with a string and if you pulled on the string with the sponge attached it make a quacking sound. Pretty clever! Kids then decorated the cup to make a ducky face. Other crafts were bunny ears kids could wear, pretty flower, as well as lots of different pictures to color.

Once again the Community Center put on a great event!
