Laurelhurst Community Club Collecting Dues And What The Funds Go Towards

The Laurelhurst Community Club is currently collecting annual dues which go towards supporting a variety of neighborhood projects and issues.

LCC invites neighbors to its monthly meeting on the second Monday of each month at 7pm at the Laurelhurst Community Center Fireside Room.

Annual Dues Drive and a Look at LCC’s Stewardship on Behalf of Neighbors

LCC’s 2020 membership drive brochure and dues statement have been mailed out. While all Laurelhurst residents and businesses are members, collection of annual dues is necessary to pay for professional services such as legal fees, expert studies and reports, design, and printing.  Land use efforts require consultants, attorneys, and communication costs, plus tons of volunteer hours.

Dues support LCC’s proactive efforts on land-use matters, traffic and transportation issues, neighborhood improvements, crime prevention, newsletter publishing, email updates, and website maintenance. An extra $20 contribution pays for landscape maintenance on the Mary Gates Way / NE 41st Street planted median. Additional contributions are always welcome to support special neighborhood projects. 

Your neighbors on LCC’s all-volunteer Board of Trustees contribute hundreds of hours each year on your behalf to maintain the livability and vitality of our community and stretch the membership dues.

Highlights of LCC’s 2019-2020 goals and accomplishments: 

• LCC advocates for a context-sensitive solution for development on the  17+ acre Talaris site. LCC dues pay for legal counsel and expert consultants on historic preservation as well as on hydrology and soils.
• LCC representatives attend the Seattle Landmark Board deliberations and its Architectural Review Committee meetings in reference to Talaris and other local landmark preservation issues. 
• LCC works with SPD on public safety and increasing coverage. 
• LCC works closely with the LEAP (Laurelhurst Earthquake Action Preparedness) team and supports its efforts. In 2018, LEAP secured funding and began preparations for the neighborhood HUB. LEAP helps create and organize local clusters for emergency response and participated in UW’s resilience research project for local communities. 
• LCC works with the UW, Sound Transit, and Metro to improve the  neighborhood’s needs for transit connections and pedestrian safety. 
• LCC funds maintenance for public median strips along NE 41st Street and replaces dead plants and maintains the irrigation system. 
• LCC successfully advocated for more City of Seattle budget support to restore Laurelhurst Community Center operating hours and programs. 
• LCC works with City Council as it develops a new tree ordinance to provide improved urban habitat and enhance its tree canopy. 
• LCC is working with the car share providers to create more access at the Montlake Light Rail station. 
• LCC participates in SR520 construction and design meetings to ensure continuous access from the northern approach to the Montlake Interchange and worked successfully to reduce glare lighting and expansion joint noise.
• LCC researches, produces, and delivers 10, in-your-mailbox editions of the Laurelhurst newsletter, offering neighborhood news and prospective on key issues.
• LCC provides the private security patrol subscription service, which is especially utilized for vacation house checks.
• LCC monitors Seattle Children’s Hospital’s new building construction process and advocates for low noise and traffic easing.
• LCC representative attends the semi-annual SCH helicopter landings review committee and offers feedback on issues.
• LCC trustees regularly address or write the Seattle City Council to comment and share views on issues such as priorities for the City budget, election reform, climate change, affordable housing, transportation, and land use issues.
• Trustees also meet regularly with our District 4 council member and state legislators.
• LCC hosts City Council members at monthly trustee meetings to offer views on programs and policies.
• An LCC representative is a member of CUCAC, which addresses land use, safety, parking, and issues related to the implementation of the UW Campus Master Plan.
• LCC provided specific design and traffic analyses for proposed new developments in the area, such as the planned Aegis facility on Five Corners, as well as for mixed use residential projects on adjacent parcels.
• LCC continues to address neighbors’ concerns regarding transportation issues and gridlock through letters to City Council, Seattle Children’s Hospital, University Village, and the University of Washington.
• LCC supports and offers volunteer staffing for Laurelhurst Park’s Spring Egg Hunt and Salmon Bake.

The annual Spring Egg Hunt is coming up on Saturday starting at 10am sharp at the Laurelhurst park for ages 12 and under. 

Over 4,000 plastic eggs stuffed with toys, stickers and candy will be scattered, as well as treats. Some eggs will have a special ticket to win a prize basket or other surprise. Kids are divided by age group. Following the event there will be field games.

Help support our can food drive to assist our local food bank and our bake sale (cash or check only) to support the community center programs.

If you are unable to volunteer but would still like to help, please donate candy and plastic eggs on  Mondays and Wednesdays 9am-8pm or Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 9am-2pm.

Spring Egg Hunt Draws Hundreds Of Kids

Cara Brown, Recreation Coordinator, at the Laurelhurst Community Center, shared this information about Saturday's egg hunt:

Hundreds of kids along with their families enjoyed the morning hunting for eggs, playing field games such as the bunny hop and egg relay, and visiting with neighbors.  

Kids in 4 age groups dashed for 4500 eggs, filled by generous volunteers and staff, and scooped up close to 1000 other goodies. 

Thank you to everyone who supported our event with donations, canned food and supporting our bake sale fundraiser. 

I would also like to thank the 30 teens who volunteered to help during the event.  We cannot offer these events without such support.

It was another great turn-out this year for the annual Egg Hunt. Several hundred children hunted for over 4,000 eggs, Cara Brown, Coordinator, Laurelhurst Community Center, told the Laurelhurst Blog Staff. The Bake Sale was also a success raising funds for community center programs and scholarships.

A big thank you to all our volunteers and staff for taking the time to come and help make our event a success!    

This event relies largely on a great group of volunteers, some veterans and some new, and of course our hard working staff as well.

Spring Egg Hunt A Success Thanks To Volunteers And Great Community Participation



Cara with the Laurelhurst Community Center sent this follow-up message about this year's Spring Egg Hunt:

Thank you to the several hundred community members who attended our annual spring egg hunt on April 4th, at the Park.  We lucked out with a beautiful day and a great turn out of kids and families.   

Thank you to those families who donated candy and/or eggs.  Over 4,000 eggs were scattered among four age groups, which only took seconds to be swooped up by many little hands!  

A big thank you to all our volunteers and staff for taking the time to come and help make our event a success!   This event relies largely on a great group of volunteers, some veterans and some new, and of course our hard working staff as well.  You left big smiles on the faces of a lot of kids and families and made fun memories for them! 

We hope everyone enjoyed the event and look forward to next year!

Candy Donations Needed For Spring Egg Hunt Next Week

 

 

 

Coming in a week, on April 4th at 10am, will be the very popular Spring Egg Hunt at Laurelhurst park for ages 12 and under.

 Donations of individually wrapped candy to fill the eggs and small items for the prize baskets are being accepted at the Community Center 9-2pm.

Neighborhood Spring Egg Hunt Draws Big Crowd





Last Sunday's Spring Egg Hunt was a big success with over 4000 eggs scattered through out the park along with loose candy and treats for kids up to age twelve and over 450 people that showed up.

Cara, Recreation Coordinator, told us that they were able to stuff 1,000 more eggs than last year due to the numerous volunteers and staff as well as the neighborhood residents who donated candy and eggs. 

 

Maxwell Meals donated all the baked goods which resulted in a successful bake sale fundraiser.  Cara told us that the funds will be used to help off-set the cost of the egg hunt and to support other community center programs.

 

Jennifer, with Food Driving Box, was also pleased with the hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food that was donated and later delivered to the University District Food bank to feed hungry neighbors in our community.

"Thank you to everyone and we look forward to next year's egg hunt!" Cara told us.

 

 

 

 

Over 900 People Attended Recent Spring Egg Hunt





Another Neighborhood Egg Hunt is over. And this year was the most well-attended, with kids dashing for candy and eggs and filling their baskets. Unfortunately it was reported some kids left empty handed, though they did get to meet the Easter Bunny.

Cara, Community Center Recreation Coordinator, wrote to us:

An estimated 350 kids were dashing for eggs this year, with an estimated 900 people in total attendance! 

Thank you to the 19 volunteers (11 of which were teens) who came day of to help set up, facilitate and clean up. Thank you to all our generous neighbors who donated bags of candy and eggs and thank you to the Specialized Programs Adult group who volunteered to stuff over 4,000 plastic eggs! Great teamwork resulted in a special day for the families in our community! 

This year, an effort was made to create aisles in between the age groups so that the kids could spread out a bit better in hopes that all kids had an equal chance at finding eggs and there was an additional 1,000 eggs scattered compared to last year’s count. 

Goodie bags and treat bags, donated by Jeannie Hale of the Laurelhurst Community Club, were provided upon request for those who did not manage to find many eggs.

Thank you to the many community members who came and supported this event. Any feedback and/or offers to volunteer for next year’s event are always welcome!

Last Saturday's Spring Egg Hunt A Success

Cara, Laurelhurst Community Center Recreation Coordinator, sent us a follow-up email about last Saturday's Spring Egg Hunt - lots of exicted kids and lots of great volunteer helping to make the annual event a success:

A HUGE thank you to the many community members and volunteers who donated candy, plastic eggs, baked goods as well as personal time to make the Laurelhurst Egg Hunt a fun and successful event!  Given that the Community Center has limited funds and personnel, the community once again stepped up to make a memorable day for the families of the Laurelhurst neighborhood. 

An estimated 300 kids along with their families enjoyed the mad dash for candy filled eggs and other goodies scattered throughout the park.  It was great to see neighbors enjoying the parks with their friends and family after the hunt was over as well. 

The Community Center also hosted a very successful bake sale to raised funds to help support families in need of scholarships.  Thank you to those who graciously donated to that cause.

Candy, Prizes And Volunteers Needed For Upcoming April Egg Hunt At Community Center

Coming in just a few weeks, on April 7th at 10am, will be the very popular Spring Egg Hunt at Laurelhurst park for ages 12 and under.

And to make it as successful as past years, Cara Brown, the new Recreation Coordinator, is soliciting donations of candy to fill the eggs and and small items for the prize baskets. Cara also is looking for volunteers to help during the event.  Interested high School students will get volunteer credit.

Last year's hunt was a huge success thanks to the many volunteers who contributed candy and their own time in helping to organize and staff the event.  Over 200 eager kids filled their baskets with candy and small toys.

Cara told us that candy donations should be individually wrapped and fit in the plastic eggs.   Items for the prize baskets for ages 3 and under should not pose a choking hazard and for ages 4-10 could be such items as chocolate bunnies, sidewalk chalk, stuffed bunnies, any leftover birthday party prizes that people may have around the house such as bubbles, etc. 

Candy can be dropped off at the Community Center  Monday – Friday between 9-2pm by March 26th and prize items until a few days before the event.
