Monster Bash Saturday At St. Stephens To Benefit Children's Hospital



Three Feet of Sunshine's 7th Annual Monster Bash, benefitting Seattle Children's Pediatric Advanced Care Team, is happening this Saturday from 3-7pm at St. Stephen's Church (4805 NE 45th Street). The cost for the event is $13 and will be held rain or shine.

The event will have a variety of activities for all ages, including pony rides, Dracula’s dance-off, ghoulish games and prizes, creepy crafts, the Phantom Photo Booth, costume contest and parade, haunted house, Seattle Fire Department firetruck, pumpkin painting, kid's dj and dancing, crafts, popcorn, cotton candy, cauldron of prizes and the Yummy Mummy Cupcake Walk. UW Dental School will provide some Tricks-and-Treats-to-Protect-Your-Teeth goody bags which include sugar-free candy, an apple, a water bottle, toothbrush, toothpaste and some tips on how to enjoy delicious Halloween treats in a mouth-friendly manner.

The popular kids band, Recess Monkey, will perform two shows. Every guest will receive a Halloween themed cupcakes, donated by Trophy Cupcakes.  And Craven Farm is donating pumpkins for each child to take home.  Guests will also be treated to re-usable Trick-OR-Treat totes.

Also available will be the card signing station, where giant cards will be signed and sent to Seattle Children’s patients who are spending Halloween in the hospital.  

Three Feet of Sunshine was established by Amy and Klane White  in July 2009 in memory of their daughter, Susannah, who spent the last year of her life at Seattle Children's Hospital,  in the care of the palliative and nursing teams at Children's Hospital.

The logo (below) was actually designed by Susannah at 8 years old. And the name, Three Feet of Sunshine, came from a friend of Susannah's who wrote a tribute to Susannah with that title, about about their friendship, as an assignment in 9th grade.

Three Feet of Sunshine, a Seattle Children's Guild, "is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and families who bear the weight of potentially life-threatening illnesses, by sharing the ever-sunny disposition and steadfast spirit of sweet Susannah - a little girl, despite spending the last year of her life in the hospital, always had a smile to give and a hug to share.  We raise awareness and funds aimed at providing opportunities and extending support programs devoted to enhancing quality of life for pediatric patients and their families."

All proceeds from this fun event benefit Seattle Children's Hospital Pediatric Advanced Care Team.  "Great fun for a great cause!' Amy says.

Don't Miss Annual Neighborhood Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

The third Annual Laurelhurst Turkey 5k Trot, open to all ages, is happening next Thursday, Thanksgiving day, November 27th, at 9am. Participants should show up at 8:45am at the northeast corner of Laurelhurst Park, by the overpass.

Brian and Kate, the organizers told us:

Join your family  friends and neighbors for a very casual and informal 5K Fun Run/Walk that zig zags through Laurelhurst following a course map given at the start.   

The Turkey Trot meanders through the neighborhood, and the route is new and improved this year with fewer hills.

 

There is no entry fee and no need to register.  At the start of the race you predict what your time will be and at the end, the person most closely matching their time wins a prize. And your finish time is based on an honor system.  

Bring your family, dog, or pet turkey and be prepared to burn some calories and have good time before the Thanksgiving stuffing! We are collecting donations of non perishable food for the University Food Bank. 

Katie, a Laurelhurst native, told us that she got the idea for a Turkey Trot from when she lived in Glen Ellyn, a small town, outside of Chicago for a few years before returning to the neighborhood. The town has of local events, including their Annual Turkey Trot.

And two years ago, Kate's husband, Brian, suggested they host a fun run, which they mirrored after the Glen Ellyn event. The first Laurelhurst Turkey Trot was on a beautiful fall morning and there were about 100 participants, and an SUV full of food donations for the Food Bank, Katie added.

Free Touch-A-Truck Event Sunday At Magnuson



 

The Junior League of Seattle’s 4^th Annual  free Touch-A-Truck event is being held on Sunday from 10-1 at  Magnuson Park.

Touch-A-Truck offers children a hands-on opportunity to explore heavy machinery, iconic vehicles and to meet the people who build, protect and serve the Greater Seattle community.  

Vehicles on display may include construction trucks, emergency vehicles, and more!  Children of all ages are invited to explore the trucks, meet their operators. The event also includes child-friendly activities like food trucks, face painting, coloring, and giveaways.

Please bring cash for food trucks and donations to the Junior League of Seattle.  Enter on the 74th St entrance, and consider using other forms of transportation and carpooling.

 

NOAA Having Open House And Tours Tomorrow

As part of the Seattle Maritime 101 Festival currently underway,NOAA (7600 Sand Point Way) will be holding an open house from 12-7pm tomorrow.

Come explore the work NOAA in Seattle does to support the maritime industry through weather forecasting, healthy ecosystems, safe waterways, protecting our coasts, and observing our planet. Come visit us for tours, hands-on activities, movies, and the chance to meet NOAA scientists.

Tours, filled on a first come, first serve basis, will include: 

WEATHER – Take a tour of NOAA’s National Weather Service Seattle office forecast center and learn how meteorologists work 24/7 to forecast the Seattle area weather from the waters of Puget Sound to the Cascade Mountains and everything in between.  Tour is 45 minutes and start times are: 12:30, 1:45, 3:00, 4:15, 5:30. 

OCEAN ANIMALS –This tour includes rare access to the NOAA marine mammal bone scientific collection that includes Orca Whale skulls and a Narwhal tusk! Then continue on to the Fisheries net loft where you will see how NOAA manages fisheries that produce sustainable seafood.  Tour is 1 hour and start times are: 12:30, 1:00, 1:45, 2:15, 3:00, 3:30, 4:15, 4:45, 5:30. 

OCEAN ENGINEERING – Step into NOAA’s engineering workspace where engineers are hard at work building and testing new technology to collect data from our oceans. See the evolution of tsunami sensing moorings and learn how we can now detect a tsunami smaller than a centimeter in the open ocean.  Tour is 30 minutes and start times are: 12:30, 1:00, 1:45, 2:15, 3:00, 3:30, 4:15, 4:45, 5:30. 

RESTORATION WALK (this may also be self guided at any time as well) - Take a walk with NOAA restoration experts and learn what we are doing to restore our campus shoreline on Lake Washington and habitats throughout Puget Sound. You will also learn about the history of our campus and various art installations along the way including the Sound Garden.   Tour is 1.5 hours and start times are: 12:30, 2:15, 4:15.

Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day Tomorrow At Magnuson

 

 

Tomorrow in honor of International Migratory Bird Day, Magnuson Park is having an event called "Migrate to Magnuson Park"  sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation, Magnuson Community Center Nature Programs and the Magnuson Environmental Stewardship Alliance.

The information says:

Bring your family to learn about amazing birds that travel thousands of miles each year to Seattle.

There will be guided walks, habitat bingo and other family-friendly activities beginning at 10 a.m. at the Magnuson Community Center (7110 62nd Avenue NE) 

Talks will be given by renowned bird experts Idie Ulsh and Dennis Paulson.  Go here to sign up for free bird walks and activities.

The Society for Ecological Restoration Northwest Chapter is also having bird walks as part of the celebration which can be found here.

The information says:

Sign up for these is limited, over the 2-3 mile distance some of the walking between points of interest will be a fairly quick pace, and focus will be more on ecological restoration of the park than on birds alone.  They will cover parts of the park less well known than the main wetland area.  Much of this restoration has been done by community based volunteers.

There is also to be at least one additional free walk in the Promontory Point Section of the park from 10-11 which will start from the educational pavilion located on the west side of the park’s most southeastern parking lot (southwest of the boat launch)  and also some shorter ones and other events centered around the community center on 62nd Avenue NE.

Drop Off Tools And Reusable Material Tomorrow At Northeast Tool Library "Reuse Day"

 

 

The NE Seattle Tool Library is holding a tool drop-off tomorrow from 9-4pm.

"Waste Not, Want Not! Creative Reuse Day" information says:

Got a basement, shed or living room full of reusable material from that last remodel?  Don’t know what to do with that left over cut of ¾” ply or extra cedar shakes cut in half from that siding job? Who uses a ¼ bottle of leftover tung oil?  Bring your extra wood, windows, hardware, fasteners, paint, stains and nails to swap and build!

Bring the kids and we'll help them build!  Some easy projects can be built with scrap and without plans: Birdhouses, Orchard Mason Bee homes, Little Free Libraries.

NEST Holding Free Financial Seminar Today At Community Center

This financial presentation is specifically for women, however men are also invited, who may be taking on the household financial management for the first time.  It is designed to decrease stress around planning and big decisions.

Due to those worries, presenters, Laurie Adams and Kevin Peterson, Financial Advisers with Eagle Strategies LLC, will discuss the best ways for to avoid ‘financial paralysis’.

Poet Richard Blanco Speaking At Northeast Library Today

Today from 1-2:30pm, poet Richard Blanco will be at the Northeast Library (6801 35th Avenue NE), as   part of Seattle Public Library's "Seattle Reads" program to get residents in the City reading and discussing the same book. 

The library's theme for its 16th year of the series is "For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey."

The information says: 

"For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey" is Blanco’s account of his life-changing experiences as the inaugural poet in 2013. He shares

life as a Latino immigrant discovering a new, emotional understanding of what it means to be an American. He reveals the inspiration and challenges behind the creation of the inaugural poem, “One Today,” as well as two other poems (“What We Know of Country” and “Mother Country”) commissioned for the occasion and included in the book, with translations of all three poems into his native Spanish.  

Finally, Blanco reflects on his spiritual embrace of Americans everywhere through the power of poetry and his vision for its new role in our nation’s consciousness. Like the inaugural poem itself, “For All of Us, One Today” speaks to what makes this country and its people great, marking a triumphant moment in American history and letters.

Richard Blanco was born in Madrid in 1969, immigrating as an infant with his Cuban-

exile family to the United States. He was raised and educated in Miami, earning a B.S. in civil engineering and an M.F.A. in creative writing. Blanco has been a practicing engineer, writer, poet and teacher. He currently resides in Bethel, Maine. He has published three previous collections of poetry. In 2013, Blanco was chosen to serve as the fifth inaugural poet of the United States, following in the footsteps of Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Miller Williams and Elizabeth Alexander. Blanco presented “One Today,” an original poem he wrote for the occasion, becoming the youngest, first Latino, first immigrant and first openly gay writer to hold the honor.

Youth Sailing Open House Saturday At Sail Sand Point



 

On Saturday Sail Sand Point is having a free "Youth Sailing Open House" from 11-3pm.

The information says:

More than a dozen organizations have teamed up and Saturday so that parents and kids can come learn about the variety of options available. Programs are available for children as young as five years old all the way through high school.

Land activities include knot tying, rigging, burgee making, and relay races.  Sailing instructors will be on the water doing tacks and gybes to show kids what sailing in boats these sizes looks like. Free sailboat rides will also be available. (Weather dependent)

"Rehabilitative Pruning" One Of Two Lectures Thursday At Center For Urban Horticulture



The Center for Urban Horticulture, located in Laurelhurst, is holding two lectures on Thursday as part of its Master Pruning Series

From 9:30-11:30 is the first lecture called "The Shearables, the Hackables and the Untouchables with UW Botanic Gardens and PlantAmnesty."

Some plants are cut to the ground each year.  But barely touch others and all hell breaks loose.  Find out which ones are which, and which ones to correctly shear.

From 12:30-2:30 is the second lecture called "Rehabilitative Pruning. "

What to do next for plants that have been seriously mal-pruned.  This advanced  class will discuss how to restore trees and shrubs to normal form

Eckstein Rummage Sale On Saturday

The Annual Eckstein Band Rummage Sale, benefitting the Eckstein music program, is Saturday from 9-3pm. Eckstein Middle School (3003 ne 75th Street) is the reference school for Laurelhurst.


The information says:

Please bring your donations on  Friday to the cafeteria between 1:30 and 4:00 pm. The cafeteria's exterior entrance faces the garden area in the back parking lot.  We need your donations to make this event a success.

Donate clothing in wearable condition, household items others could use, books and music for fresh ears and eyes to enjoy, furniture in good condition, toys, games and puzzles with all pieces and parts and sporting equipment for a budding athlete. No electronics, unassembled furniture, baby carseats or strollers. 

At the Rummage Sale there will be great deals to be had, baked goods, and music from our very own award winning jazz combos. 

Proceeds raised from the rummage sale go directly to the Ecksteins music program and are used to help offset some of the cost of off-campus music performances, repair damaged instruments and provide scholarship to children who needs assistance.
