Today Historic Storms Talk At Magnuson

NEST (Northeast Seattle Together), which supports Northeast Seattle elder neighbors through a network of volunteers and vendors, is having a presentation today at 2pm called "Storm Warning: Historic Weather in the Evergreen State.

The event is being held at the Magnuson Park Brig (6344 NE 74th Street) in the Garden Room.

The information says:

Local broadcaster and historian Feliks Banel explores our region’s darkest weather days and most infamous storms. With archival photos, radio, and TV clips, Banel takes us back in time to hear stories of those who survived some of the worst Pacific Northwest weather in recorded history.
Further, Banel explores how these storms can revive our shared humanity. Frightening weather can bind communities together to share resources, commiserate, and protect each other. Participants are encouraged to share their own memories of how they survive being snowed in, washed out, or left without power in the wake of a big storm—and why we remember those moments for the rest of our lives.
Feliks Banel is a writer and producer, and serves as editor of COLUMBIA, the quarterly magazine of the Washington State Historical Society. He has been a host and contributor for KIRO Radio on matters of Northwest history and culture for many years; he created the history series This NOT Just In for KUOW Public Radio; and he produces documentaries for the Seattle Channel.

Monday NEST Lecture On Downsizing

NEST (Northeast Seattle Together), which supports Northeast Seattle elder neighbors through a network of volunteers and vendors, is having a presentation on Monday at 2pm called "The Upside of Downsizing: Getting to Enough.

The event is being held at the Magnuson Park Brig (6344 NE 74th Street) in the Garden Room.

The information says:

Dr. Sara Hart will discuss her book: The Upside of Downsizing: Getting to Enough and her experience dealing with the emotional impact of downsizing. In this caring and lighthearted presentation, Dr. Hart will offer helpful hints on how to communicate effectively with Real Estate Agents, Professional Downsizers, Stagers, and friends and family. Dr. Hart will offer sage advice about taking care of yourself during the process and understanding what “getting to enough” means and how it can be so helpful to you.
“How will I know when I have enough?” That is the question Sara Hart asks audiences when talking about her special project called Sign of Enough. She began her project in the mid 1990’s, and recently her passion has been refueled as the results of our over consumption and greed become more and more obvious. The idea also became the watch word for her as she completed a major downsizing of her home.
Dr. Hart has been involved in helping to develop leaders and effective teams inside organizations for 30+ years. Prior to founding her own management consulting company, Hartcom, Sara was in charge of Training and Development for the research division of Pfizer both in the US and the UK. She has facilitated hundreds of groups and presented to scores of meetings.

This presentation describes the world view, built upon experience, of each American generation since WWII. The presentation and discussion aim to increase understanding, decrease assumptions and possibly move us toward more tolerant attitudes and positive communication.

Learn About Leaving A Legacy Monday At NEST Cafe

North East Seattle Together

NEST (Northeast Seattle Together), which supports Northeast Seattle elder neighbors through a network of volunteers and vendors, is holding its monthly NEST Cafe Series on Monday at 2pm on the topic "They Don’t Want Your Stuff, They Want Your Stories!" at the Magnuson Park Brig.

The information says:
What legacy will you leave with your family and friends? Will it be the things of your life – your grandmother’s antique desk, your wedding china and silver, the money you set aside for your grandchildren’s education? Or will it be the stories of your life – lessons learned over a lifetime, and the messages of love and appreciation to those most dear to you? Too often we focus only on the objects and financial aspects of our legacy and neglect the preservation of our stories and the wisdom gained from our life experiences.
Join Eva Dougherty, owner of Smooth Transitions of Seattle, and Kathy Englert, owner of Your Story Unfolded, as they discuss the concept of legacy and share the surprising results of studies in this area. They’ll help answer the question “What do I do with all my stuff?” and provide strategies for preserving items with financial and sentimental value.
They’ll also provide you with a variety of ideas for capturing and preserving the important stories and lessons of your life. During the presentation, you’ll pair up with another attendee and share your own stories.
Think about an object you own that has a great story associated with it. If your object is relatively small, please bring it with you.
