Evening Burglary On Webster Point

The Laurelhurst Blog received this information:

Two homes in the 3000 block of Webster Point Road NE were burglarized on Saturday February 4 between 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm while both homeowners were gone. 

Entry had been gained by climbing up and smashing through sliding glass doors on the second and third floors of the homes. 

Cars in both of their driveways were not vandalized but both homes were thoroughly searched, trashed and many items were stolen. 

Videos show three men wearing dark clothes and masks. 

Copies of security footage were sent to police and reports were filed.  

Middle School Boys Vandalized Talaris

 The Laurelhurst Blog received this information:

At about 4:30 pm on Tuesday January 10, four middle school-aged boys were crouched down on the NE 41^st side of the Talaris property, then they ran away up the hill. 

A short time later the Talaris groundskeeper came looking for them and reported that they had been vandalizing the Talaris buildings – breaking lights among other things. 

One boy had light brown/blond hair and a pale complexion (with pink cheeks from running) and he wore a powder blue t-shirt. One of the other boys wore a yellow t-shirt and had brown hair.

All four ran up NE 41^st, then down the 43^rd NE boulevard, then left onto West Laurelhurst Drive NE, then they turned left onto 45^th Avenue NE. 

I assume they live somewhere in that part of Laurelhurst, but every time they saw me they ran for it, so I don’t know where they ended up. If you know who they are, it would be good to talk to them or their parents before they get into big trouble. I understand the police have been alerted.

Fleeing Car Crashes In Neighborhood

 Information from Seattle Police Department Blotter:

Detectives Investigating Friday Afternoon Shooting and Car Crash in Laurelhurst Neighborhood

Police arrested two people after a woman called 911 and reported they had just pointed a gun at her in the 4700 block of Ravenna Avenue North around 2 pm Friday.

Police arrived in the area within moments and spotted a grey Toyota sedan fleeing the area. Officers briefly followed the vehicle before it crashed at Northeast 41st Street and Mary Gates Memorial Drive. Three occupants bailed out of the car and fled the crash on foot leaving behind a rifle in the car.

Officers searched the surrounding neighborhood and arrested two of the suspects and continue to search for a third person.

The victim told officers that this all began as a fight disturbance a few days ago and has continued to escalate resulting in a shot being fired today.

Detectives with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit are taking over the investigation and will work with prosecutors as the case moves forward.

Attack In Field Across From University Village

 The Laurelhurst Blog received this information:

At 7:30am on Saturday, November 12th, an attack  occurred in the open field across from University Village. 

A neighbor was playing with his dog when a 6’5” white male with a beard started making barking noises at the dog.  The man then went into the woods, returned with a log and started to lunge at the neighbor.  The neighbor was able to outrun the attacker.  The attacker ran away towards the University Village. 

Police were called but were unable to make an arrest because the attacker did not actually touch the neighbor.  The attacker ran away towards U Village.  

From the physical description of the person, this attacker appears to be a different assailant than the one who pushed other neighbors to the ground while walking on the Urban Horticulture grounds last month.

Here is inforamtion about the CUH attack:

At 2pm on August 31 at the entrance to the Center For Urban Horticulture, a  neighbor and friend were chased by a man wielding a stick yelling that he was going to kill them.  Running at full speed, he pushed our neighbor to the ground. The man was Caucasian man, in his early 20’s, clean-cut student-look.

 

The UW police were called and showed the neighbor a photo of the man who came through a closed gate and showed up in a another neighbor's pool a week earlier at 7am.  This photo didn't match the CUH male.   

Here is information directly from the person who was attacked in August:

A  ellow Laurelhurst neighbor and I were walking in the Horticulture Center when a guy chased and attacked us.  He looked very clean cut and we originally thought he was a UW student.  He looked to be about 22 years old. We heard him yelling, but thought he was yelling at a friend.  

All of a sudden he said he was going to kill us.  He charged towards me running at full speed.  I thought he was going to punch me but he just shoved me really hard onto the ground.  I wasn't very hurt..  It was just scary.  

I called UW Campus Police and we went back to the site but he was gone.

We had a couple of attempted break-ins to our building as well as cars being broken into mid-July.

One of the attempted break-ins was around 3:05 am on July 9th, we could see the Seattle Police in our back parking lot while the suspect was still here. We think he was hiding by our dumpster. As soon as the patrol car left, he came back into view from a different camera We don't know for sure because our camera that covers our dumpster area currently isn't working.


No one from our building called the police, not sure why they responded. The owners of unit that he attempted to break-in was out of town but got an alert from their security system.


We wanted to share the pictures because these people are probably working the neighborhood.

 

Driver Under Influence Takes Right Turn Onto Sidewalk On NE 45th Street

A white older model construction truck is currently blocking the sidewalk on the corner of NE 45th Street and 43rd Avenue NE. 

Multiple police cars are on the scene, as well as a large tow truck.

Police said that the driver was under the influence (DUI). The officer also added that no one was hurt. 

The side of the white truck says "R & R Construction Inc.  Carbonado, WA"

# of Officers Decrease, Police Response Times Increase

In my newsletters in April and May, I detailed the alarming reduction of officers and detectives at SPD – losing nearly 1/3 of our frontline officers and detectives, even as our city’s population has gone in the opposite direction:  growing by 25% in the past 10 years -- from 600,000 people in 2010 to nearly 750,000 people today.  Meanwhile, we still don’t see sufficient emergency response alternatives in place yet. So it should be no surprise that it’s taken police longer to respond to violent crimes in progress (Priority 1 calls) and they are frequently unable to show up for the lowest priority calls. s I have mentioned repeatedly, I am very concerned about the policing staffing crisis after having lost more than 300 officers and detectives over the past 2 ½ years. No other City department has lost more than 1/3 of its frontline workers and, for a department needed for a holistic approach to public safety, I believe this warrants special attention.  Based on what I heard firsthand at these rollcalls, a lot of work needs to be done to rebuild trust.  I’m afraid this attrition of officers AND detectives will be much worse next month because of a new State law (SHB 1701). Unfortunately, that new State law financially incentivizes officers eligible for retirement to retire by July 1, 2022 before a special benefit expires.  I look forward to Mayor Harrell’s forthcoming safety plan, which hopefully includes a compelling strategy for not only recruiting but also retaining our experienced officers. We need to refocus our efforts on retention – we need to retain highly trained officers because recruiting takes such a long time and we are losing many more officers than we are recruiting.  I appreciated the compromise Resolution and Council Bill that Council adopted by a 6 to 3 vote on May 24, 2022 -- and we need to do more. Here are the remarks I had prepared for the Public Safety & Human Services Committee on June 14, 2022:

“Many City leaders say they want to craft policies and budgets based on the data and yet, once again, we have this disturbing data in front of our eyes: the number of police officers is dangerously down and the response times are dangerously up and this confirms what we hear from our constituents.  I recently attended six different roll calls (at the start of their patrol shifts) and heard directly from public safety officers about their plummeting morale and lack of trust for several reasons: King County Jail often refuses to book the suspects SPD officers risk their lives to bring to justice and services, and City leaders aren’t doing enough to retain officers while other jurisdictions offer bonuses and simple gestures, such as allowing officers to take home their patrol cars and providing technology to keep them safe.  I opposed the 50% defunding push as misguided and I introduced legislation 9 months ago to retain police officers, but several colleagues rejected it. Recruiting new officers to replace the hundreds of officers departing Seattle is vital, but that takes a long time and ignores the experience of our existing officers, so I am hopeful Mayor Harrell’s public safety plan coming soon also includes immediate and robust retention actions to prevent Seattle from losing more officers.”   -- City Councilmember Alex Pedersen

Police Report Gun Shots Near Children's Hospital

On May 31st at 6:30pm, we had our 1000 pound gun safe with hunting rifles stolen from our garage.  

Police said the same vehicle, a red/burgundy van, was used in this incident and the one near Children's Hospital (see SPD Blotter below).  

None of our guns was used. The person already had a gun. Both of the incidents occurred around the same time.

#2022-137988/North Precinct/Second Watch:

On 05-31-2022 at 1840 hours, officers responded to the 4800 block of Sandpoint WY NE for simultaneous calls of a shooting, a suspicious call, and a burglary. The three calls described the suspect vehicles as a maroon Ford Escape SUV and white Nissan or Infiniti sedan. Callers reported that four males broke into a residence, stole a large gun safe, pushed the safe down the street, and loaded the safe into the Ford Escape. The white Infiniti followed closely behind. The vehicles began to drive away from the residence, and at some point, one of the vehicles’ occupants opened fire on a car (that was occupied and being driven) and a bullet struck the front grill. Officers responded to the residence where the burglary occurred and discovered that a large gun safe had been stolen that contained approximately 15 firearms. The driver of the vehicle that was hit by a bullet was not injured. A few minutes later, a resident in the 6100 Block of 12 AV NE reported that a white Infiniti sedan parked outside of her house. The occupant got out of the vehicle, went to the back porch, changed his clothing, and walked away. Officers responded and found the white Infiniti. The vehicle appeared to have an AR-15 and body armor inside (visible through the window). The vehicle was registered to an address in Lakewood, WA. K9 responded, searched the area, but did not locate the suspects. The car was impounded to the vehicle processing room for further investigation. GVRU and Public Affairs notified. The maroon Ford Escape is still at large. Lakewood PD contacted the registered owner of the Infiniti, who claimed to have sold the car in 2021.

From KOMO News information on May 31st:

There are two suspects on the run after allegedly stealing a gun safe before shooting a gun near Seattle Children’s Hospital.

It started around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday when someone in the 1200 block of NE 61st in the Ravenna neighborhood called police saying they saw the burglary.

The witness said they saw suspects load a gun safe into a car from a home before two vehicles left. One was a Maroon Ford Escape, the other was a white two-door Infinity.

Police say a car was shot near Seattle Children’s a little later and they believe the suspects were the shooters, though it’s unclear if it was on purpose.

The Infinity was found, unoccupied, in the Ravenna area a while later, though the other vehicle and the suspects are still missing.

Burglary On East Laurelhurst Drive

We were unfortunately the victim of a burglary at our residence on East Laurelhurst Drive NE the night of May 8th.  Thieves broke in by gaining access to the lock-box on our front door (concerning given the number of workers in and out of the home that may have either not properly closed or, more concerning, provided access).    

Our personal items were rummaged through and we feel very violated.  One of our contractors had several thousands of dollars worth of tools stolen.

We have established stronger security measures but ask neighbors to be on the look-out for those coming and going outside of hours that normal work-crews would operate.  As best we can tell this was very very early morning between 5-9am.

Suspicious Person Near Hospital

 The Laurelhurst Blog received information about a suspicious male with a shaved head prowling in the Windermere Circle neighborhood, adjacent to Children's Hospital, several day ago in the evening.

The male was  reported in the 5000 block of 44th Avenue NE, known as Windere Circle, one block north of  NE 50th Street and 44th Avenue NE. The male appeared suddenly from a hidden area and approached the resident with reportedly a screwdriver. The resident was able to get safely into their apartment.

Another neighbor reported seeing a similar person on Sand Point Place NE, a block northeast of the Hospital.

Reportedly the police have received several reports of this male and ask citizens to call 911 immediately to report any suspicious behaviour.

Girl Scout Cookies Taken

 The Laurelhurst Blog received this information:

On Friday, March 4th around  5pm, I left my house heading to a grocery store Girl Scout sale and left my hatch open of my car. 

Please be on the look out for a man in a black BMW who picked up our Girl Scout Cookies at the bottom of NE 45th Street by the former Pro-Robics building.  

It was reported that a bunch of kids stashed them behind a dumpster at Valarmos Restaurant.  Unfortunately, this instantly makes them unsellable.  We have received a few cash donations. If anyone responds, let me know.

Neighbor Reports Loud knocking and Pounding On Door

Be aware that neighbors in the 3000 block of East Laurelhurst reported an attempted break-in while they were home at their house at 11:45 last night, Thursday, 11/18.  

The would-be thief attempted to break into their home through their sliding glass door using a key (not for that door).

Break-in To Garages And Vehicles

The Laurelhurst Blog received this information from a neighbor:

On Tuesday, August 31st around 2:30am, a male, most likely with an accomplice, broke into two neighbors’ garages on the3300-3500 blocks of 46th Avenue NE and East Laurelhurst and 47th Avenue NE. 

He stole 3 bicycles and an electric scooter. 

He also was checking out all vehicles in the area. He broke into another neighbor’s vehicle and ransacked it. 

SPD was notified.
