LEAP Looking For Radio Operators

Laurelhurst Community Club (LCC) posted an update about  Laurelhurst Earthquake Action Preparedness (LEAP), a grassroots organization started by Laurelhurst residents in a recent newsletter. They are in need of radio operators. See the information below.

LEAP's mission is to save lives, reduce injuries and strengthen the community’s resilience according to a member of the organization.

LEAP has divided the neighborhood into clusters which roughly align with blocks and consist of about 20 houses each. LEAP Cluster Captains duties include organizing clusters, helping with building a family disaster supplies kit and establishing an emergency plan with neighbor, including a designated meeting and distributing LEAP communications to neighbors.  To find out your cluster information contact lccearthquake@outlook.com

Working together can be fun, getting to know your neighbors better and all. Where to evacuate to if necessary could be important, too. Neighbors help neighbors. The first days or weeks it will be up to all of us to be prepared. The day after a major earthquake is not the time to try to figure out how to survive in Laurelhurst. Once Laurelhurst is organized it will have less effort to maintain.
LEAP is run by your neighborhood volunteers and we are working towards emergency communications, first responders, setting up triage areas, gathering places, community hubs and so much more. Everyone needs to understand how to organize their own household and where to help and get help when the big one hits.
Your Laurelhurst Community needs you to be prepared and understand how to get help. We want your families to be safe and ready to help others. Let's hope it never happens, but let's all be prepared if it does.

Here is the most recent update from LEAP:

LEAP Seeks Radio Operators

Are you looking for a new hobby? Want to learn a quick and easy new skill and help your neighbors and your City at the same time? Become a radio operator for Laurelhurst Emergency Action Plan (LEAP).

LEAP volunteers have been working on the Emergency Communications HUB on St. Stephen’s Church grounds. The HUB will activate in the event a major emergency causes failure of our usual means of communication.

Without cell phones, land lines, and regular news broadcasts, Laurelhurst would likely be isolated from people outside the neighborhood and from City health and emergency services. A means for neighbors to seek and offer assistance will be crucial.

We will rely on radios to communicate within Laurelhurst, with other Seattle hubs, and with Seattle Emergency Services. To accomplish this, we need more radio operators. There are two types of operators needed: HAM (amateur) and GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service).

Both of these operators require training, certification, and hours to become a licensed operator. LEAP has details on the types of training required and costs associated with each of these radio options.
