Backyard Garden Tips For Seniors


NEST (Northeast Seattle Together), which supports Northeast Seattle elder neighbors through a network of volunteers and vendors, is holding its monthly NEST Cafe Series today at 2pm on the topic "Your Backyard Garden: Health, Habitat, and Simplicity" at the Magnuson Park Brig (6344 NE 74th Street).

Is your garden a mess? Do you enjoy your outdoor spaces, or is your garden just a burden? What are some simple ways that you can re-think your garden to maximize your health, safety & enjoyment, and provide environmental benefits? Using examples from local projects, Joanna will focus on space & structure, ideas for outdoor seating areas, adding backyard & bird habitat, and strategies for management and success. 
Joanna D’Asaro is a Landscape Architect with Greener Living Solutions and has been designing and managing custom residential exterior projects in Seattle for the last 20 years. Her passion and design focus includes creating outdoor living spaces, tree and habitat restoration, native plantings, edible gardens, and finding joy in nature. 


NEST is a non-profit grassroots operation serving NE Seattle seniors by creating a "virtual village" to helping them be able to stay in their own homes and neighborhoods they love. Volunteers provide companionship, care, as well as help seniors with a wide range of services, including gardening, computer help and more. to seniors aging in their homes. Ongoing classes (fitness, etc) are also offered, as well as access to events, transportation services, and various services (such as estate planners) who provide their services at a discount to members.
