Youth Global Leaders Film And Lecture Series Starting At UW

Bess Nuland, Program Manager at Global Visionaries, a local non-profit that "empowers young people to be global leaders in creating a just and sustainable future", is hosting a youth-led film and lecture series at University of Washington called Visionary Viewings as a fundraiser for the program.

The first in the six part monthly film and lecture series starts on Sunday from 4-7pm with the viewing of "Koch Brothers Exposed: 2014 Edition" and Guest Speaker: Marc McDermott, Economic Justice Popular Educator. It will be held at the University of Washington, Savery Hall Auditorium.

Here is information:

Film Synopsis

An expose on the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, who helped finance the conservative political advocacy group Americans for Prosperity.

Guest Speaker, Mark McDermott

Mark is an activist and civil servant who has dedicated his life to fighting for economic, racial, and social justice. For 25 years, he served in senior policy and executive positions in state, local, and federal government. In these roles, he supported the rights of workers to organize unions and bargain collectively, promoted economic development policies that create good family-wage jobs, and aggressively enforced and expanded wage and hour law protections for workers.

Bess told the Blog staff that:
Global Visionaries is a multi-year youth leadership program. In the first year of the program, youth participate in our Leadership Program which is a school-year-long curriculum for high school students that culminates with a culture immersion experience in Guatemala.

The program emphasizes community service at home and abroad while promoting an understanding of global interconnectedness.  Students then continue on to the second year of the program, the Youth Board, where they break into teams and explore topics around social and environmental justice and global citizenship in the Seattle community.

Our film series is an opportunity for our students to select a documentary and speaker on a topic of their choosing and present it to the community.  All of our programs are comprised of 50% low-income students and our fundraising goes towards the costs of running the program as well as providing scholarships for students to participate.
The Visionary Viewings Film and Lecture Series is a community engagement and fundraising initiative organized by Global Visionary's second year program, the Youth Board. The program is comprised of 6 teams that learn about and take action around social justice and global issues. Each month from January to June, one team of youth will select and present a film and speaker on a topic of their choosing for the Global Visionaries and greater Seattle Community.
