Don't Miss the Yesler Swamp Mystery Tour This Sunday and It's Free

This Sunday, kids age 3-10 and their parents, are invited to become Junior Animal Detectives, along withv Zoe and Girl Detective, and her special swamp friends, and search for clues to solve “A Swamp Mystery for Kids” an interactive nature mystery for kids, at Yesler Swamp,  part of the UW Union Bay Natural Area in Laurelhurst.

The event is put on by Friends of Yesler Swamp, a group of "Laurelhurst neighbors who have volunteered to help develop and improve a trail through the swamp located at the corner of NE 41st and Surber Drive – just beneath the tangle of blackberry vines.

The group is seeking to create an all-weather, handicap-accessible resource for our community. We hope to construct a boardwalk over the part of the trail that is submerged part of the year and also build a view point from which to watch wildlife," says their website.

Friends of the Yesler Swamp is presenting this live entertainment to introduce local residents, kids and adults alike, to the natural wonders of this unique piece of nature in the heart of Seattle. The kids will be led through the swamp, on dry ground by the fun cast of characters.

Children and their parents will be entertained with games and comedy antics as they learn about local wildlife and gather clues to solve a mystery involving some of the swamp's colorful residents.

“A Swamp Mystery for Kids” is written and produced by Art Feinglass whose nature mysteries for kids have been a favorite
with children at the Prospect Park Wildlife Center, a.k.a. The Brooklyn Zoo.

"This is the first time the neighborhood has had an Art Feinglass mystery tour, so we’re very lucky," Jean Colley, from Friends of Yesler Swamp, tells us.

The mystery will begin in the east parking lot of the Center for Urban Horticulture, near NE 41st and Surber Drive NE. Watch for signs. There will be two performances: 10-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m.

Admission is free and RSVP's are helpful but not required..

Kids and parents should come dressed for walking on an occasionally muddy trail.

"This is going to be a wonderful event, and we're really excited about sharing this remarkable swamp with the community at large!" Allie Kerr , webmaster with Friends of Yesler Swamp, wrote to us.

If you have questions, please email Jean Colley, colleyj@comcast.net, a Laurelhurst neighbor and member of Friends of Yesler Swamp  or go here.

There is also a work party on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The group will be cutting new trails and hauling in chips and will continue to wrestle with the pesky blackberry canes.

"Please come out and help us. You’ll get acquainted with some of your neighbors and help with the habitat restoration of one of Seattle’s unique areas," writes Jean Colley.
