Special Election On School Levies in One Week

One week from today is the Special Election with contains the 2 Seattle school levies on the ballot:

Capital Levies (Proposition No. 1) $270 million replacement levy to provide the funds to renew and replace aging buildings with modern and efficient facilities. In addition, capital levy and bond funds are used for improvements in athletic fields, classrooms, technology and mechanical equipment. The six-year levy – Buildings, Technology and Academics III (BTA III ) – replaces the Buildings, Technology and Academics II levy (BTA II) approved in 2004 and would fund building, academic and technology projects that would benefit every school in the District

Operations Levies (Proposition No. 2) a $442.7 million replacement levy to support core SPS programs by providing nearly 25 percent of the funds for the District’s day-to-day operating expenses. These funds help pay for teachers instructional assistants, full-day kindergarten, sixth period at high school, student activities such as drama, music and athletics, and security and student transportation. The operations levy would replace the three-year levy approved in 2007; it represents nearly one quarter of the District's day-to-day operating budget, and supports educational services not fully funded by the state.

Ballots can be dropped off at the one King County drop box left at the main headquarters or at Seattle Union Station voting center. Otherwise, you’ll need to provide your own stamp to mail it in.

Check out a story we did on this a few weeks ago. Also Schools First has comprehensive information about the levys .
