Sand Point Elementary School is going to re-open in the Fall of 2010.
So a group of parents who live within the defined boundaries of Sand Point Elementary School (SPE) have set up a website as well as regular meetings to form various committees, including a steering committee in order to support and guide the district in the re-opening of the school.
According to this very interesting website on the history of the school, Sandpoint Elementary School opened in 1958 on the site of an old orchard field with 13 teachers and 407 students. In 1979 enrollment dropped to 176 and the school finally closed in 1988 operating at 56 % of capacity. Since 1990 the school has been leased to North Seattle Community College.
The website says "Citizens opposed the possible closure, citing its relatively new facility, low
maintenance costs, and success in voluntary desegregation. The school had a minority enrollment of 38 percent. University of Washington students whose children attended Sand Point petitioned both the district and the university to retain the school."

The Sandpoint Elementary Group's next meeting is this Sunday at 7:30pm at Zoka and a following meeting on January 23rd at Vios.
The website says, "This is a great opportunity to help create and implement a new school in our community! Please get involved.
This meeting will focus on formalizing committee member roles and next steps for the committee. We will also hosting a daytime meeting in hopes of reaching out to those not available on evenings."
