Hospital Construction Activity This Week

Building Care, also called Forest B, of Phase 2 of Children's Hospital expansion is underway and the new building is planned to open in Spring of 2022.

The 310,000 square-foot addition will add an eight-story building and will includes diagnostic and treatment facilities, primarily out-patient cancer and others) labs, new state-of-the-art operating rooms, 20 inpatient beds, and a lobby. There will be two floors of underground parking and sterile processing. This will bring SCH bed total to 409, up from 200 before its expansion 2012 plan.

The helicopter landing pad moved temporarily to the roof of Forest A (176’), now known as Friends of Costco Building, Phase 1 of the expansion. The landing pad will be active until Building Care is completed. Noise is expected to be louder than the former ground-based helipad. When Forest B is complete, the helistop will moves to its permanent location on top of the Friends of Costco Building (same height).

Lights were added to the horizontal swing arm (boom) portion of the tower crane to increase safety for helicopter landings. These are in addition to the lights at the end of the boom and on the crane operator’s cab. The additional lights will help the helicopter pilots in identifying the location of the boom when landing or departing the helipad in the dark. While the lights are visible from the ground, they are not bright enough to interfere with any neighboring properties. As a reminder, the tower crane is scheduled to remain onsite through August 2020.

Construction noise will be generated throughout the week. The soil installation will generate some odors. Expect heavy truck traffic, primarily for concrete and material deliveries. Construction activity is weather-dependent and subject to change based on conditions.

All work will take place 8-6pm weekdays and 9-6pm on Saturdays. 

Children's Construction Suspended Till May

Children's Hospital posted on their Construction Blog last month, that Building Care construction site work was suspended until April 8th.

Children's recently posted that the construction site has been extended in accordance with the Governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” emergency order, through May 4th.

Some construction staff will be onsite to ensure the job site remains secure.

Hospital Conducting Controlled Water Test On Monday

Children's Hospital posted this information on their Construction Blog about a waterflow test taking place on Monday.

The information says:

Crews will perform a water flow test for approximately 30 minutes, in which a large amount of water will be discharged from test ports on the south side of Forest A (Friends of Costco Building).  

Most of the water will drain into catch basins on Seattle Children’s property, but some will likely drain into the storm water system on 40th Avenue NE as well.  

If you see water draining from the hospital that day, there is no need to be alarmed — this is a planned and controlled test.

Saturday Monster Bash At St. Stephens Church To Benefit Children's Hospital

Three Feet of Sunshine's 10th Annual Monster Bash, benefitting Seattle Children's Pediatric Palliative Care, is happening on Saturday from 3-7pm at St. Stephen's Church (4805 NE 45th Street). The cost for the event is $13 and will be held rain or shine.

The event will have a variety of activities for all ages, including a haunted house, pony rides, Dracula’s dance-off, ghoulish games and prizes, creepy crafts, the Phantom Photo Booth, costume contest and parade, haunted house, pumpkin painting, Seattle Fire truck visit, kid's dj and dancing, crafts, popcorn, cotton candy, cauldron of prizes and the Yummy Mummy Cupcake Walk.

The popular kids band, Recess Monkey, will perform two shows at 4 and 5pm. Every guest will receive a Halloween themed cupcakes, donated by Trophy Cupcakes. And Craven Farm is donating pumpkins for each child to take home. Guests will also be treated to re-usable Trick-OR-Treat totes.

Also available will be the card signing station, where giant cards will be signed and sent to Seattle Children’s patients who are spending Halloween in the hospital. Bring a new, unused costume for a Seattle Children's Hospital patient and receive an extra special trick-or-treat.

Three Feet of Sunshine was established by Amy and Klane White in July 2009 in memory of their daughter, Susannah, who spent the last year of her life at Seattle Children's Hospital, in the care of the palliative and nursing teams at Children's Hospital.

The logo was designed by Susannah at 8 years old. And the name, Three Feet of Sunshine, came from a friend of Susannah's who wrote a tribute to Susannah with that title, about about their friendship, as an assignment in 9th grade.

Three Feet of Sunshine, a Seattle Children's Guild, "is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and families who bear the weight of potentially life-threatening illnesses, by sharing the ever-sunny disposition and steadfast spirit of sweet Susannah - a little girl, despite spending the last year of her life in the hospital, always had a smile to give and a hug to share. We raise awareness and funds aimed at providing opportunities and extending support programs devoted to enhancing quality of life for pediatric patients and their families."

Children's To Remove Trees Around Perimeter Of Campus This Week, Bus 78 Rerouted

Some large trees around the perimeter of Children's Hospital campus will be removed this week between 9-4pm.  The work will include noise from chainsaws and chippers. 

Children's posted this information on their Construction Blog:

• Monday: Crews will remove two trees at the Metro route 78 bus stop and turnaround on the southeast corner of the hospital campus. The stop will be closed while the trees are removed. Metro will reroute bus 78 along 45th Avenue NE and 46th Avenue NE to serve as a temporary turnaround. To accommodate buses, no parking will be allowed on the east side of 45th Avenue and along both sides of 46th Avenue near the intersection with NE 47th Street that day. 
• Tuesday: Crews will remove one tree at the southwest corner of the hospital campus, near the intersection of 40th Avenue NE and NE 45th Street. Crews will also prune two trees near Sand Point Way south of Penny Drive. No traffic or parking disruptions are anticipated.
• Wednesday: Crews will remove three trees on the south side of NE 47th Street between 44th Avenue NE and 45th Avenue NE. Trucks will be parked on NE 47th Street to access the trees. No traffic or parking disruptions are anticipated.

Upcoming Hospital Work On 40th Avenue NE Near Emergency Department

Starting Thursday, Children's Hospital will close and fence off the area between the hospital and 40th Avenue NE.

The information says:

Preparation Work for Modified Emergency Department Drop-Off Project 

The existing Emergency Department (ED) driveway will be narrowed by the fence placement. Once the fence is up, crews will remove the on-site hard surfaces (such as the walkways and the old smoking shelter pad) and will also install protection measures for on-site trees and utilities.  

This work, which will take place from Aug. 24 to Aug. 31, is the next step in a larger, phased project to construct a modified ED drop-off area in preparation for Building Care construction. 

The sidewalk on 40th Avenue will remain open during this stage of work.  

The fence will remain in place for the future phases happening over the next few months. 

The work will occur from 8-6 pm weekdays and 9-6pm on Saturday.Normal levels of construction noise are anticipated.

Crane To Be Installed At Hospital Saturday For Upcoming Building Care Project

Children's Hospital would like to let the  neighborhood know that this Saturday and next, a crane will be installed to remove and install new trailers. 

The information provided says:

On Saturdays, March 3 and 10, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., work will take place at Seattle Children’s on the south side of the Forest loading dock to remove old modular trailers and install new ones.   

The trailers are being upgraded to provide an adequate amount office and collaboration space to support the onsite staff for the Building Care project starting June 2018.

A crane will be placed near the ambulance bays to complete this work.  The cranes will be setting the new construction trailer, on 3/3 it will set the 4 bottom units and on 3/10 it will set the 4 upper units for a total of 8 new trailers. 

Some street parking along 40^th Avenue NE will be unavailable during work hours to enable safe removal and installation of trailers, and easy entry and exit for ambulances. 

The trailers that were currently  in the south lot (6 trailers and two storage containers ) have already been removed to make room for the new construction trailers.  All of the trailers that are currently in the south lot (6 trailers and two storage containers).

Normal noise levels are expected for the set up, running and taking down (removal) of the crane.

Updates On Center for Spiritual Living, Talaris and Apartments at 40th Avenue NE and NE 45th Street On Monday's Hospital Advisory Committee Meeting Agenda

Monday night from 6-8pm, the SAC (Standing Advisory Committee), made up of representatives of Children’s Hospital and surrounding neighborhoods, will hold its 18th meeting in the Ocean Café on the 7th floor (Ocean entrance) of the hospital. 

The SAC advises the City and Children’s Hospital on issues related to the design and construction of new buildings and other projects under the City approved Children’s Hospital Major Institution Master Plan.

 

Agenda items are:

• Updates on: Center for Spiritual Living, Talaris and Apartments at 40th Avenue NE and NE 45th Street
• MIMP Conditions

Children's Hospital And Boy Scouts Offering Christmas Trees Recycling On Saturday

A Second Life for Christmas Trees

On the south end of main campus on Saturday from 9-4pm, Seattle Boy Scout troops will be chipping recycled Christmas trees to provide mulch for Seattle Children’s gardens.  

Neighbors are welcome to bring their Christmas trees over and join in this green effort to support the Boy Scouts and Seattle Children’s.  

There will be trucks and flaggers present near 45th street, with little impact to traffic.

Learn About Children's Hospital's Next Building Phase At Tonight's Meeting

Tonight from 6-8pm, the SAC (Standing Advisory Committee), made up of representatives of Children’s Hospital and surrounding neighborhoods, will hold its 17th meeting in the Ocean Café on the 7th floor (Ocean entrance) of the hospital. 

The SAC advises the City and Children’s Hospital on issues related to the design and construction of new buildings and other projects under the City approved Children’s Hospital Major Institution Master Plan.

Tonight's meeting will focus on discussing the design of upcoming construction of the 293,000 sq.ft building, named the Forest B Building, which will be located on the existing surface parking lot at an angle to Building Hope, recently completed. 

The front entrance will be on the narrower street, 40th Avenue NE and not Sand Point Way. Three floors of parking (241 stalls) will be added under the new building. The hospital cafeteria will move to the lower level.  The helistop will move to Building Hope temporarily and then to the roof of the new building.

Forest B will house a Hematology/Oncology clinic and infusion center along with 10  operating rooms.  The Hartman Building will become an outpatient diabetic care facility with construction starting in early 2018 and completion in 2020-21.

Children’s to Begin Next Building Phases

LCC members of Seattle Children’s Standing Committee – Brian McMullen, Jeannie Hale, Stan Sorcher and Colleen McAleer – attended a September 22 meeting where the SCH team presented plans for upcoming developments.

CEO Jeff Sperring, M.D., who has been there for a year, is getting up to speed and is planning to make changes. One of their new “brilliant goals is to bring medicine closer to where they live” – a suggestion LCC made six years ago! SCH is finally expanding north into Everett – a 35,000 s.f. multi-specialty clinic and urgent care facility on the Providence Everett Colby campus opening in 2018. The new Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic 2.0 will service families, approximately 35,000 s.f. with room to grow, and may open in 2020 or 2021. SCH is currently looking for a site from Rainier Valley to Kent. SCH Bellevue operations are also very full.

Building Cure, a new cancer drug infusion center, will be built downtown next to their research building. This facility will manufacturer SCH’s unique, successful infusion products, tailored for each patient. Underground parking will be included.

LCC subcommittee members had many questions and concerns to be addressed. SCH representatives will present their plans at a public LCC trustee meeting early in 2017. The date will be announced.
