Fire Pit Garbage Can Set On Fire

On April 10th, it was reported that the the garbage can near the firepit was set on fire and the metal lid, also burned was thrown down the hill.

A neighbor said that he and other neighbors have done a lot over several decades and even recently to save the fire pit, and he said it's such a shame that most likely students damaged public property with no remorse.

Cara, Laurelhurst Community Center Recreation Coordinator, told the Laurelhurst Blog:

I have not heard about anyone being apprehended regarding the fire pit issue. I know our grounds crew cleaned up the mess and got it all back in shape. They monitor and work in the park daily as well as open/close and clean outdoor restrooms. We do not have staff working full time from the building, just checking in periodically to check on things and gather any items we may need to work from home.

A neighbor told the Laurelhurst Blog staff:

I was at the park the morning after when the garbage can was in the fire pit. The grounds were clean and I simply picked the garbage can up and put the lid on it and put it back.

There was no mess and the Parks Department did nothing. They are giving themselves too much credit taking responsibility for cleaning it up.

Fire This Morning At Home In 4300 Block Of NE 45th Street

An early morning fire in the upstairs of a home on the 4300 block of NE 45th Street caused "minimal damage" as one firefighter told an onlooker. A person on their way to work commented that the information on the scanner "didn't look really bad."

Shortly after 6am this morning, six fire engines came racing up NE 45th Street along with several other support fire vehicles. A chainsaw was heard cutting a whole in the 2nd floor roof and glass was broken in an upstairs window for more ventilation.

The family next door was seen with their small children going to another immediate neighbor's house during all the activity. Their house was not known to be damaged.

NE 45th Street at 45th Avenue NE was closed as well as 45th Avenue NE at NE 45th Street. Cars were seen backing up on NE 45th Street after they had seen the cones blocking access to the area, then the vehicles were seen then turning northbound on 46th and 47th Avenues NE.

About 7am "Fire Support Vehicles," a City vehicle, as well as some new fire vehicles, started arriving and talking to the home owners who were standing out in front, most likely to start the investigation of the fire. There were no injuries.

As of this time, several fire engines are starting to leave but the streets have not been re-opened.

The Seattle Fire Department tweeted at 6:26am:

Firefighters at working fire 4300 Blk of NE 45th St. All occupants out of 2 story residence.

Another tweet was sent out at 6:43am - most likely referring to the same location, however another street was tweeted:

Small fire on 2nd floor "tapped". Fire investigators called to location. 4300 blk of NE 43rd st.

LCC Thanks Seattle And Bellevue Fire Departments

The Laurelhurst Community Club sent the below letters to the Seattle and Bellevue Fire Departments, who responded to Monday's fire on Laurelcrest Lane, which was sparked when lacquer fumes were ignited by a furnace, according to the Seattle Fire Department. Damage is estimated at more than $7 million. The fire has been determined to be an accident.

Here is an email we received from a Blog reader:

Thank you for the excellent coverage. Indeed our hearts go out to all the effected home owners especially Mr. Hussey and Dr. Trask as their homes were already occupied and full of family treasures. Please convey our support for them if you can.

Here is LCC's letter to the Seattle Fire Department:

Dear Chief Dean,

The department's rapid response to quell the blaze was instrumental in preventing the further damage to adjacent homes. Your fire squad members immediately secured the area, aided those in need, and hosed down properties perched above, and all around the narrow street that made the access very challenging.

The fire fighting teams stayed long into the night to ensure that hot spots did not erupt, and prevented any more damage to life and properties.

All of the nearby fire squads supported each other in their efforts to extinguish the blaze, and it was the team effort that brought this tragic fire under control. The 38th, 40th, 17th were the first responders, and the neighbors are grateful for their work on their behalf. There were many more who contributed as well from nearby fire stations.

The City of Seattle's fireboat squad also contributed to attacking the flames from the waterside to get it under control. We also thank the City of Bellevue for supporting with their relief squad.

Thank you, and all of the City of Seattle's 100 firefighters who worked so effectively on behalf of all of the residents in the Laurelhurst community. Please know that we appreciate the safety risk, and sheer hard work it took to put out the volatile fire and make the neighborhood safe again.

And here is LCC's letter to the Bellevue Fire Department:

Dear Chief Eisner,

On behalf of our neighborhood and the Laurelhurst Community Club Board of Trustees, we would like to express our appreciation for the efforts of the Bellevue Fire Department's second response to the residential fires on Laurelcrest Lane on the afternoon of Monday, October 8, 2012.

Six Homes Damaged In 3 Alarm Fire Yesterday Near Beach Club

A furnace explosion just after 3:30pm yesterday started a house fire at the unoccupied home under construction owned by Adam and Laura (Szlyk) Selipsky on the 5100 block of East Laurelhurst Lane.

The fire spread to two homes next door, one to the south, owned by Jeff Hussey, and the other to the north, owned by Gina Trask.

The embers from the fire also started a small brush fire on a nearby hillside, according to Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore.

Embers from the brush fire also landed on three other rooves of homes, as well as damaged siding on another home, just above East Laurelhurst Lane, on NE Latimer Place.

Helicopters were overhead for about 2 hours filming the fire and TV crews were on the ground on NE 41st Street.

About 100 fire personnel arrived on the scene, with firetrucks coming from throughout the city and even Bellevue, one nearby resident told us. Firecrew and PSE stayed at the scene until about 7pm.

One construction worker was taken to Harborview with facial burns and two firefighters were also taken to Harborview, one for heat exhaustion and the other for a minor injury.

One nearby resident commented "I wonder if there has ever been a previous time with this many fire trucks and firemen in Laurelhurst at one time." And another resident added " We feel badly for those families whose houses were damaged."
