Thanks to Save Union Bay Association’s (SUBA) ongoing efforts to remove the non-native, invasive milfoil and noxious weeds on the northern side of Union Bay, kayakers, swimmers, boaters and float boarders can finally enjoy the bay without being entangled in weeds.
SUBA was organized in 1970 to deal with milfoil problems. Since that time, we have been involved in a variety of ecological projects including working with King County to harvest milfoil; preventing pumping algal water from Green Lake into UB; and daylighting Ravenna Creek into the University Slough. Our current projects include invasive wildlife and plant management.
Union Bay is at the western edge of Lake Washington where the Montlake Cut connects Lake Washington with Portage Bay and Lake Union. The navigation channel between the lakes is dredged to 20’. The rest of the bay is 3’-10’ deep.
The intense three-year pilot program with the Department of Ecology has been funded by local waterfront homeowners, Union Bay users, and the crew programs and the waterfront student activities from the UW. Additional funding is needed to continue its success.
SUBA is ready to begin treatments starting in May of this year, depending on available funds. SUBA needs the support of all Union Bay users to help to the bay clean. Donations are 100% tax deductible - SUBA is a 501-C trust for improving the environment.
