SDOT"s Pedestrian Safety Tips For Older Adults
June is national safety month for seniors and according to SDOT from 2010 to 2013, people aged 50 or older accounted for 70 percent of pedestrian fatalities in Seattle and most pedestrian-involved collisions occurred in marked crosswalks
Dylan, on behalf of SDOT, sent us some safety tips to help keep older people alert and aware of important safety practices when walking as well as drivers ensuring pedestrians have enough time and space to cross the street, as more and more people are out with the nice weather.
Safety tips:
KNOW YOUR WALKING SPEED
Seattle has installed pedestrian countdown signals at many intersections. Know your abilities and don’t start crossing when the “Don’t Walk” message is flashing.
SCOUT YOUR ROUTE
If you’re going to explore - plan your route ahead of time.
LOOK, SMILE, WAVE
Make eye contact with drivers to make sure they see you before crossing. A simple wave and smile can help reinforce goodwill on our streets.
LOOK LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT
Look before crossing. Drivers turning left or right should be watching for pedestrians, but this doesn’t always happen.
BE SEEN
Consider wearing bright and reflective clothing so that drivers can see you in the evening.
