Steel beams in place for Tennis Center at Sand Point

Jake Moe, Laurelhurst resident and tennis instructor, sent us a picture of the first steel columns erected for the construction of the new indoor  Tennis Center at Sand Point, located at Magnuson (6310 NE 74th Street).

The Tennis Center will have 10 tennis courts, a viewing platform, Wi-Fi internet access, locker rooms, a full-service café and pro shop.  The land is Seattle City Park land and leased for 30 years.

Jake told us "Now that we are 'out of the dirt' and working above ground, progress will happen very very quickly. The projected opening is June 1st, however with good weather and no delays, we could be open earlier. This 30 year effort by local citizens is finally coming to reality!"

The Tennis Center will be to the public seven days a week year round and will include instruction and programs, with high-quality clinics, USTA League events, camps, as well as workouts and programs for all ages and skill levels.

"With some of the area’s best teaching professionals, the new tennis center will expand on what the RTC started and cater to 1.0-5.0+ NTRP level players" the website says.

The Sandpoint Tennis Center is owned by Johann Tan, Program Director, of Seattle Court Sports Management at Sandpoint,  and his business partner Scott Marshall, Managing Director, who are local tennis players, and opened the Raquet Training Center in 2009, a  4-court training facility with 19,500 foot square foot former Hangar 30 at Magnuson Park.

They opened this location first to bring tennis to the area sooner and showcase some of the programs and start building the community interest in tennis prior as they waited for plans to be approved to launch the new Tennis Center.
