Junior Summer Camps and More Offered at New Tennis Facility at Sand Point

Johann Tan, Program Director, of Seattle Court Sports Management at Sandpoint, sent us email wanting to let the community know that the Junior Summer Tennis Camps for ages 6-18 are underway at the new Raquet Training Center (RTC) located at the old Sand Point Naval Sation. He said all skill levels are welcome to participate in the 8 day camps which run till July 30th.

The tennis camps focus on fitness, drills, instruction, match play and having lots of fun and they use the USTA's QuickStart format of play for kids ages 6 through 10.

The 4-court training facility was opened in December 2009 in the 19,500 foot square foot former Hangar 30 at Magnuson Park.  The voids in the hangar's old concrete floor were filled and sealed using a high quality water-based acrylic finish to surface the courts in the U.S. Open blue and green color scheme.

Scott Marshall, Managing Director, told us it took him and his business partner, Johann, 3 years to "successfully negotiate a 30-year lease with the City to build and operate Seattle's first privately run, public tennis center.

Our newly opened 4-indoor-court, Racquet Training Center was developed to start building the community interest in tennis prior to launching our larger, 10-court facility.

The Quickstart tennis format is very popular with the younger kids, because it allows them to play and have fun at a very young age. We use smaller rackets, foam balls and smaller nets and courts."

Johan and Scott are also currently working on the opening of their Tennis Center at Sand Point, a public tennis center, slated to open in early to mid 2011. They opened the Racquet Training Center at Sand Point to bring tennis to the area sooner and showcase some of the programs that will eventually be run from The Tennis Center.

The new Tennis Center will have a clubhouse and will host tennis functions, activities and tournmanets. There will be  "ten temperature-regulated indoor courts, of which four will be seasonally covered. The facility will cater to tennis enthusiasts of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds," their website says.

At this facility, the public can also rent a court for $25 an hour by reserving ahead of time.
