Deadline To Comment On QFC Expansion Tomorrow

The deadline to comment on the proposed QFC expansion ( 2746 NE 45th Street) at the University Village is tomorrow, June 1st.

"This is a land use application to demolish a 14,000 sq. ft. storage building (in the back parking lot off of Blakely Avenue NE) and establish parking for 44 parking stalls for a total of 472 parking stalls accessory  in an environmentally critical area," the  Land Use application states.

Jeannie, Laurelhurst Community Club President, told us that "this is a big change from its original proposal to add underground parking with housing above and shops below."

Jeannie adds that there isn't much required for a project of such a small size other than preparation of an Environmental Checklist,  in which QFC has stated that there will be no increase in traffic and no need for mitigation for impacts of the project.

"That is likely true, but what we don’t know is their future plans. QFC has been a good neighbor and very cooperative in working with the neighborhood and responsive to any concerns from neighbors," Jeannie told us.

At this time, LCC is reviewing the project application in hopes that QFC may require some minimal mitigation that would benefit both QFC and neighbors.

Jeannie said one idea is to install a pedestrian/bike pathway from Blakeley/Union Bay Place down to their parking lot and a sidewalk above the parking lot.  There is a narrow walkway beside the housing, but it is not wide enough for bikes.

Currently, bikes use the roadway competing with cars in entering University Village at its back entrance, whic is very unsafe for bikers.
