Public Hearing for Proposal for New Restaurant At Magnuson Park on Thursday

Seattle Parks, with Councilmember Sally Bagshaw as the sponsor, has submitted a proposal for a zoning change to the city's land use code to potentially put in a restaurant in the former "Crows Nest Inn" flat part of Building 9 in the Sand Point Historic District at Magnuson Park. Building 9 is located just south of the N.E. 74th Street entrance to Magnuson Park.

The restuarant would be located where the old mess hall was for the bachelor's quarters. The requested size is not to exceed 1,500 square feet.  Also included in the request is a mini-warehouse in the same building.

The amendment the Parks Department is seeking would allow for additional commercial use in that building.

Lynn, who is active in Magnuson Park issues says in an email, "This (restaurant) and the basement mini-storage are part of the proposal for 120 units of workforce housing for UW faculty, staff and maybe grad students there. UW would manage it; they would be rented not sold.

"The storage would be used by both residents and other park users for storage. They said lack of windows prohibited more apartment development there.  Also mentioned was an artists gallary as part of the space but they do not need a zoning change for that."

Lynn says "Personally I think the mix of moderate income housing with very low income will be good. That is what is being done in most housing developments now citywide. Parking will be an issue of course."

Here is the ordinance on file to amend the Seattle Municipal Code in Section 23.

This Thursday a public hearing will be held on the proposal at 9:30 a.m. in Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of Seattle City Hall located at 600 Fourth Avenue. It is open to the public to give their input.
