Great Big Deal at University Heights Center on Saturday

"Great Big Deal" says the invite. This Satuday, at 10am at the University Farmers Market, Mayor Nickels and others will celebrate the community's purchase of the University Heights center "for the community" from the Seattle School District as the invite from Karen Ko, of the University Neighborhood Service Center says.

"A dream 20 years in the making has finally come true," the invite goes on to say.

"The historic landmark is being purchased by the University Heights Center for the Community Association, a non-profit community organization that has leased the school from the District and provided space and support for community programs since 1989."

The Seattle Parks Department has purchased a portion of the southeast corner to create a community park that will be integrated with the rest of the building and the overall site.

Ko says, "This unique collaboration will also create a solid future for the University District Farmers Market which will continue to operate at the property."

Mayor Nickels and Councilman Richard Conklin will kick-off the event at 10am and at 10:30 the popular "Ready, Set, Go" Cooking competition at the Farmers Market will begin.

"This is a great example of how the city is helping the community create an important gathering space. Working together we now have so much to celebrate: a new park, the Farmer's Market and permanent community ownership of this historic neighborhood treasure," Nickels is quoted as saying on the invite.
