Multiple Car Windows Smashed Along 41st Avenue NE and NE Surber Drive

On Monday morning, April 19, I walked 41st Avenue NE, between NE Surber and 41st Avenue NE, in the early morning,  which has an unbroken block of homes on the east side of the street. 

I saw that almost every other car on the east side of the street had a window smashed. It was an awful parade of vandalism!

The Laurelhurst Community Club sent this information to neighbors:

There has been a recent rash of "smash and grab" car prowl attempts with many vehicular windows being broken along NE 41st St, NE Surber Dr, and East and West Laurelhurst Dr NE. Remember to remove all contents from your cars every day, and park in your garage or in your driveway, to deter these nightly prowlers. Report any of these incidents to the Seattle Police Department's non-emergency website.

On 8/24, our Toyota  was vandalized while parked in front of our home on 51st Avenue NE in the short block north of NE 45th Street, where the Villa traffic exits.   

The hood emblem was taken, damaging the finish. Above is a photo of a similar emblem in hopes that someone might see one unattached to a vehicle. We'd be glad to get it back.  

We've heard that two other neighbors also said their emblems were taken, including a BMW emblem last month and the other removed from a car between 8/12 and 8/22.  So that makes 3 of us.

Another resident on West Laurelhurst Drive also reported her Tesla emblem had also been removed, and the car scratched up as well.

Vandals Cut Padlock On Power Line At North End Of Park Resulting In Power Outage

Seattle City Light car following up yesterday after Saturday night vandalism

Residents north of the Laurelhurst Park experienced a power outage about 9pm on Saturday night due to suspected individuals reportedly cutting a padlock on a power line damaging a lever.

One resident in that area sent us this report:

The power went off Saturday night  about 9:02 PM until about 12:15am.  I talked to Seattle City Light (SCL) and they showed me a significantly bent lever and a cut padlock. I heard one employee say that they were going to wait for the police to take pictures before they repaired the damage.

Some one intentionally cut a padlock and forced a disconnect lever open bending the lever in the process. The SCL employees said they were sure it was a deliberate act. I don’t know for sure when  the police arrived.

According to the SCLweb page the outage affected about 80 homes. Most homes were in the neighborhood Northeast of Laurelhurst Elementary School and some on the south side of NE 45^th Street from about 42nd Avenue NE to 45^th Avenue NE. I could see lights on in the houses behind my house on NE 44^th Street, so it was just the row of houses that line NE 45^th Street.

The pole that was vandalized is between 45^th Avenue NE and 46^th Avenue NE, right across the street from the church on the north end of the park.  I looked at the  pole yesterday and there appears to be a new metal handle and new padlock on it. Apparently they fixed Saturday night before restoring power.

 

A Laurelhurst Blog Staffer saw the enormous SCL truck on Saturday evening  making repairs, then a smaller white vehicle (pictured) doing some more repairs to the pole yesterday.

Recent Car Prowl and Car Vandalism On Labor Day

We received two separate emails from readers about recent car prowls.

The first one happened on the corner of 50th Avenue NE and NE 43rd Street. The reader told us that the car was parked on the driveway on 50th Avenue NE. 

He added:

Someone rummaged through our car parked in our driveway – took a few items. Unsure if they broke in or if the doors were unlocked.  This occurred either this morning or Labor Day evening…do not know if the found bike and the car prowl are related.

There was no sign of forced entry into the car, but there were also no valuables visible  as we always keep things hidden from sight and they had to go through our gym bags in the trunk and glove compartment, moved around the car seat  etc…most likely we forgot to lock the car and someone came by and was trying the doors.

The second email was from a reader who lives  on N.E.45th Street and NE 51st Avenue block near the south exit of Villa Academy.

The reader said the vandalism happened during the day on Monday.

She added:

Our street had car vandalism Monday night that I feel the blogger should be aware of.  We had 3 cars who had BB holes in the windows, one of which was shattered.

Week-end Vandalism Of Street Signs Near St. Stephens Saturday Evening

A reader who lives near St. Stephens Church (4805 NE 45th Street) reported that street signs were pulled down on Saturday evening.

The email says:

Saturday evening at 11:15pm we heard two loud crashes at NE 45 Steet and 48th Avenue NE.

We went out and street signs had been pulled down.  We called the police and the patrol drove by. 

At 11:45pm we heard more noise outside.

At least two teens/young adults in a light colored sedan were trying to unscrew the school speed sign by St Stephens. They jumped in a car and sped off when they were told to scram.

The reader said she also spoke to the caretaker at St. Stephens and he said the other sign was on NE 45th Street. The caretaker also called the police and said he saw them patrol twice.

Reward Offered For Young Vandals Who Damaged Excavator Last Saturday Afternoon

We received this urgent email from a reader who asks your help in finding the alleged vandals:

Tom's Tree Service is offering a $300 cash reward for the identity of the boys who threw a rock through the wind screen of the excavator sitting on the lot at 3814 44th Avenue NE on Saturday  April 9th, about 3pm. 

The boys then entered the truck’s cab and used their feet to push out the window completely.

There were 4-6 caucasian boys, about 12-14 years old. All had brown hair and one was a redhead.
