Boys Trek Bike Stolen Near Laurelhurst Elementary School

We received this email from a neighbor:

My 6 year old son's 20" Trek bike was take from in front our home on the 4700 block of 46th Avenue NE, sometime between late Tuesday night and early Wed morning Oct 23rd. It is black and blue with the words MT 60 on the down tube.

My son is devastated as he rode his bike all the time. My husband put a lot of work into the bike, adding gears, brakes and new tires.

My son left the bike in our front yard between two sets of stairs so someone would have to deliberately walk up our stairs to take the bike.

All School Dance At Laurelhurst Elementary Tonight

Tonight from 6:30-9pm is the 3rd annual Laurelhurst Elementary All School Dance hosted by the 5th grade class of 2012.

Arden, one of the parent organizers of the event tells us "It is a great event for the whole family and it is fun to see how much the kids love to dance!  All Neighborhood families are welcome!"

At 8pm there will be a dance contest. The concession stand will be open for treats.

Cost is 5 per person and $20 per family

Laurelhurst School Cafeteria Featuring Washington Grown Produce, Grains and Dairy Once A Month In Lunches

This week is National School Lunch Week and it is significant for Laurelhurst Elementary School in that the school as part of the Seattle School District as well as five other school districts in the state have received funding from Seattle and King County Public Health to improve nutrition standards as part of a Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant, Andrea on behalf of Public Health told us.

The recent press release says that about one in five school-age children in King County are overweight or obese, which increases their of risk serious health problems.

As a result, the Seattle School districts along with Auburn, Highline, Kent and Renton school distrcts are all working to make nutritional changes in their menus as well as making healthy choices easier for students.

Seattle Public Schools is working to make school meal changes by increasing the variety and amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables offered, as well as 100% whole grains products, reducing sodium levels, developing new main entrees and whole grain sides and providing only milk that is low-fat, non-fat white or flavored milk, which recently have changed their  formula to have less sugar and no high fructose corn syrup.

Laurelhurst Elementary School, as well as 35 other schools in the distrct, are participating in Washington Grown, as part of the Harvest of the Month program in which only Washington grown produce, whole grains and dairy are served on a monthly basis in school cafeterias.

The Seatle Public School nutrition information says: " We have new initiatives partnering with local farmers and local chefs to create recipes that appeal to students and utilize fresh seasonal (local) ingredients."

The special program also provides educational materials about the foods to educate children about eating locally grown foods, including "how eating foods, in-season, supports sustainable business and reduces environmental footprints."

The October Harvest of the Month's featured food on the menu is cucumbers from a farm in Skagit Valley.  Cucumbers are on the menu calendar throughout the month in a variety of recipes - and Toubouli salad recipe is provided along with interesting facts about cucumbers.

Laurelhurst Elementary Fall Grounds Clean-Up On Saturday

We receive this information from Lansing and Wendy,  PTA Building and Grounds Co-Chairs, at the school:

Laurelhurst Elementary School is holding its’ Fall clean-up work party this Saturday, fom 8am-Noon.

We hope all our neighbors will join in. Kid’s are welcome.

Bring your favorite tool (with your name on it) and gloves.

Coffee, juice and donuts provided.

Husky fans have plenty of time before kick-off to chip in a few hours to make our neighborhood look great!

Ice Cream Social And Carnival At Laurelhurst Elementary School On Friday

This Friday Night from 5-8 pm is the popular Ice Cream Social at Laurelhurst Elementary School.

"Grab your friends, grandparents, and neighbors for a fun evening of rides, pizza and of course ice cream!" the invite says.

Judy, co-chair for this year's Ice Cream Social, passed along to us that as always, the community is invited for a very fun evening filled with lots of activities for all ages - including games, Varlamos pizza dinner, riding the ponies, opportunity to win a cake, face painting, bouncyhouse, dunk tannk, and ice cream sundaes.

There will also be an exciting raffle with great prizes including digital camera up for raffle, along with the iPod Touch and unicycle.

Laurelhurst Elementary's Unicycle Juggling Team To Perform At Storm's Half Time On Thursday

Uni-Jug Team at UW Performance

The Laurelhurst Elementary Unicycling and Juggling Team, called Uni-Jug “A” Team, has been invited to perform during halftime of the Seattle Storm women’s professional basketball game, the reigning 2010 WNBA Champions, on Thursday at the Key Arena.

Ths is a very exciting event for the Uni-Jug as this is first time the team will have a chance to perform at a Storm halftime.  The team has performed at UW Husky men's and women's basketball games, Roosevelt and Garfield high school games, and at other venues for years.

The information for the event says, "Come watch fine athletes perform amazing feats of skill -- and also see a great basketball team play!  Please plan to join us, watch the kids’ performance and support the team. Bring your family, friends and neighbors."

Dave Glazer, a volunteer parent of former Uni-Jug Team members, is coordinating the sale of tickets through an arrangement with the PTA.

He tells us that members of the Laurelhurst community are very welcome to come watch a great game and halftime show. 

Tickets can be purchased at a deep discount for only $15 a seat for tickets which are usually priced at $34. Contact David at glazko2@comcast.net to purchase tickets. The last update from Dave was that they are looking to sell more tickets to make the Storm-required minimum, with more than 100 tickets still available.

Dave says, "Your financial participation helps families in our community as well as provides more fan support for the Storm and our very own, fabulous Uni-Jug Team."

Friends Of Laurelhurst Elementary School Foundation's Big Night Out Saturday at JM Wine Cellars

The Friends of Laurelhurst Elementary School Foundation (FOLF), a nonprofit organization, is having their Annual Five for Five Celebration/ Dinner and Wine Tasting on Saturday at JM Winery in Woodinville. The Party Bus will once again pick up the party goers at the school for this fun evening out.

The owners of JM Winery, John and Peggy Bigelow, are parents of children who are Laurelhurst Elementary Alumni. 

Mary, 545 Co-Chair, told us that once again this year JM Winery, is generously donating the use of their winery as well as a portion of all the wine sales on Saturday evening back to the Friends of the Laurelhurst School Foundation.

Last year's event was fun not only fun, but successful in supporting the Foundation.

The primary vehicle for fundraising for the Foundation is through the Five for Five campaign, which is comprised of a group of Laurelhurst parents and grandparents who commit to donating $500 for a total of 5 years. All Five for Five participants are invited to this annual event to celebrate their commitment.
