Tomorrow Annual Neighbor Appreciation Day And Fire Station Open House

Tomorrow is the Annual Neighbor Appreciation Day sponsored by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.

The City website says:

We invite all Seattle residents to celebrate Neighbor Day by indulging in random acts of kindness. It is a special day set aside to reach out to neighbors, make new friends, and express thanks to those who help make your neighborhood a great place to live.

The Department of Neighborhoods has posted a list of participation ideas, as well as ideas for local businesses or community groups. 

Some ideas include doing something nice for a neighbor, organizing a neighborhood potluck, open house, or work party, joining in a neighborhood service project to clean up a park, plant trees, organizing a neighborhood cleanup, holding a bake sale for charity or to raise money for a neighborhood project, sharing a “great neighbor” story with #NeighborDay.

To celebrate the occasion, Seattle Fire Stations will be open to the public from 11– 1pm. 

Residents can stop by their neighborhood fire station to meet firefighters, tour the station and learn about firefighting equipment.

Station 38 (4004 NE 55th Street), serving Laurelhurst, and surrounding neighborhoods, will be open and welcoming visitors. 

A neighbor said "It's a great chance to stop by for a visit and a chance to meet the firefighters in your neighborhood."

"Visitors should be aware that firefighters may need to respond to an emergency and close the station to visitors during that time. Firefighters will return after the alarm and re-open the station," the website says.

Fire Station 38 Serving Laurelhurst Holding Open House On Saturday

 

 

Saturday is the City's 19th annual Neighbor Appreciation Day and as part of the festivities the Seattle Fire Department is opening up many of its local fire stations to the public.
 

Fire Station 38 (4004 NE 55th Street), located across the street from Metropolitan Market will be open from11-1pm.
 

Neighbor Appreciation Day started in 1995 when Phinney Ridge activist Judith Wood suggested that the City designate "a special day to celebrate the goodness in those around us and to reach out and strengthen our bonds to each other and express thanks to those who live or work around us."

From that year on, Mayor Norm Rice proclaimed the Saturday before Valentine's Day as Neighbor Appreciation Day. The observance has grown every year since.

New Fire Station Open House on Saturday Morning

The Fire Station 38 crew has moved into their newly built fire station located at the corner of 40th Avenue NE and NE 55th Street across the street from Metropolitan market (4004 NE 55th Street) in the Hawthorne Hills neighborhood.

Saturday is the much-awaited Open House from 11-1pm. Neighbors will be able to tour the station, meet the firefighters that work there and also on hand will be activities for the kids.


It is the community's first chance to check out the new station, which houses one engine company (E38) and a reserve engine.

The station broke ground in September 2009. The new station has modern office and living quarters with much more  square footage than the old station located at the corner of NE 55th Street and 33rd Avenue NE.

The old station, built in 1930, was granted landmark status in 2004. The City will sell the historic building, located at 5503 33rd Avenue NE, and put the money back into the Levy program.

Tomorrow, on Saturday, February 6th, in celebration of Seattle’s 16th annual Neighbor Appreciation Day, Seattle Fire Stations will host open houses from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents can stop by their neighborhood fire station to meet firefighters, tour the station and learn about firefighting equipment.

Firestation #38 is the one that serves this area and is located at 5503 33rd Avenue NE.
