Sound Transit is holding a contest to win a behind the scenes tour of the UW Light Rail Station. Here is more information:

University of Washington Station VIP Tour!

Shop or dine at a *participating U District or Roosevelt business and enter to win a behind the scenes Sound Transit VIP Tour of the University of Washington light rail station.

To be eligible, you must spend at least $5 and complete an entry form at one of the participating businesses. You can enter every time you visit. You must be at least 18 years old.

A drawing will be held in May 2015 to select the winners. You will be notified by email or phone. No entry form information will be sold to an outside party and this prize has no cash value.

Help Design Pictograms For New Sound Transit Stations

 

Sound Transit is currently developing pictograms for future Link light rail stations, including the nearby UW  Station, closest to Laurelhurst

The information says:

A pictogram is an icon that conveys meaning through its pictorial resemblance of a physical object. Pictograms are used on Sound Transit's Link light rail station signage and way-finding materials. Paired with station names, they help identify stations and the surrounding neighborhood. 

 

Share your ideas by completing this questionnaire.  listing up to three adjectives to describe each station area, up to three landmarks that represent the areas and, cutting to the chase, describing what image would make a good pictogram for the stations and why.

Sound Transit plans to start service in 2016 to Capitol Hill and the University of Washington, in Seattle, and Angle Lake Station, in Sea-Tac; and in 2021 to the U District, Roosevelt and Northgate.

New Phases Of UW Station Construction Will Detour Burke-Gilman Place Users

The UW Station Construction Montlake Triangle Project (MTP),  centering around the intersection of Pacific Street and Montlake Boulevard, started this month and will be complete by August 2015.

The information says:

The MTP consists of lowering NE Pacific Place and constructing a land bridge connecting the Montlake Triangle, including Montlake Boulevard, Husky Stadium and University Link Light Rail station and the lower Rainier Vista. 

The Burke-Gilman Trail will be rerouted that will take users around the lower Rainier Vista using the existing trail, which will be enhanced with a new paved surface to accommodate all modes and user capacity.

Once the Burke-Gilman Trail is detoured, eastbound vehicle traffic on NE Pacific Place will be rerouted to the existing bridge currently used by the Trail.  Southbound Montlake vehicle traffic going west will continue past the southern tip of the Triangle and turn right onto NE Pacific Street.

The MTP is part of the overall Campus Master Plan to transform and activate the Rainier Vista and Montlake Triangle area as a more vibrant public space and connect people to transportation options.

Part Of Montlake Boulevard Closed All Week-end For Building Of Pedestrian Bridge

All traffic lanes and sidewalks on Montlake Blvd. between NE Pacific Street and Pacific Place will be closed Saturday from 3am through Monday 5am for construction crews to continue building the University of Washington Station’s pedestrian/bicycle bridge  across Montlake for the new UW Light Rail Station, which will be a 3.15-mile extension of light rail from down­town Seattle to the University of Washington.

Cars and pedestrians will be diverted as follows:
• Northbound traffic must turn left from Montlake Blvd. onto NE Pacific Street, right onto NE Pacific Place and turn left back onto Montlake Blvd. at the signal.
• Southbound traffic must turn right onto NE Pacific Place, left onto Brooklyn Ave NE, left onto NE Boat Street, left onto 15th Ave NE and right onto NE Pacific Street to the Montlake Bridge.
• Pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured onto a temporary bike path around the triangle and Pacific Place.
• The west sidewalk will be closed. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured onto a temporary bike path around the triangle and Pacific Place.

Plant salvage At North Link's Brooklyn and Roosevelt Station Sites

Tomorrow from 10-noon, Sound Transit is hosting a plant and landscaping materials salvage event in advance of building demolition at the sites of the future Brooklyn and Roosevelt North Link light rail stations, as part of their commitment to sustainability.

Plants, including small shrubs, and landscaping materials will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis and Sound Transit requests no early birds.

Participants must bring their own tools such as shovels, pots and gloves, for removing and taking away the items they choose.

At the Brooklyn Station site meet in the parking lot of the Chase Bank building (4300 Brooklyn Avenue NE). Plants available include Barberry, Nandina and Boxwood.

At the Roosevelt Station site meet at 1033A NE 66th Street, across from the QFC parking lot. Plants and landscaping materials available include Yew, Bamboo, Juniper, pavers, retaining wall systems and decorative concrete edging.

Sound Transit Conducting A Project Survey

Sound Transit is working on improving the project information provided on their website by conducting a survey.

"Our goal is to make the site more useful and usable – ultimately so you can find the information you’re looking for easily.  Your feedback will help us better understand what is working, what isn’t working, what’s missing and what the top priorities are for the redesigned site," the information says.

Sound Transit Community Meeting Regarding UW Station Tomorrow Night

Tomorrow night from 5:30-7:30pm Sound Transit, which has been working on the UW station for quite some time,  will hold a Community Meeting at the  Museum of History and Industry in the McCurdy Gallery ( 2700 24th Avenue East).  The presentation will begin at 6:30pm

The latest design of the pedestrian connection from the UW Station to campus will be shown by representatives of Sound Transit, University of Washington and Washington State Department of Transportation.

Currently, Sound Transit is excavating the site for the underground light rail station and launchiig the tunnel boring machines that will dig the tunnels between UW and Capitol Hill which is to take until the middle of 2013. And at the same time, a second contractor has joined the tunneling contractors to begin construction of the station.

Traffic Advisory Tomorrow Evening

Another Husky football game at the University of Washington tomorrow from 7:15 ­– 10 p.m.

70,000 attending are expected to attend at Husky Stadium in the game against the Oregon State University Beavers.

SDOT advises to expect congestion on 520, I-5 and in the vicinity of the University District as well as on all arterials surrounding the stadium before and after the game.

U-Link Construction Cameras Now On-Line

If you're curious to see what is going on behind the construction walls, Sound Transit has installed web cameras to give people a bird's eye view of the construction for the University Link light rail stations.

The cameras will show the progress of the construction over the next seven years until University Link opens for service in 2016.

"University Link is a 3.15 mile light rail extension that will run in twin-bored tunnels from Downtown Seattle north to the University of Washington, with stations at Capitol Hill and on the University of Washington campus near Husky Stadium.


University Link will serve the three largest urban centers in the state of Washington – Downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill and the University District. By 2030, the University Link line alone is projected to add 70,000 boardings a day to the light rail system.

Update on UW Light Rail Station

Construction is well underway along Montlake Boulevard near Husky Stadium for the new UW Light Rail Station, which is the 3.15-mile extension of light rail from down­town Seattle to the University of Washington.

This month, a Sound Transit contractor has been installing geotechnical monitoring devices in the sidewalk on the east side of Montlake Boulevard between NE Pacific Street and NE Pacific Place and it should be completed by end of this month.

Also going on at the same time, Sound Transit’s contractor has been working on widening the sidewalk to make it safer for bicyclists and cyclists.

Also this month the contractor is creating a new truck access and modifying the Pacific Street intersection along Montlake Blvd.

A temporary sidewalk has been established using concrete barriers to separate the pedestrian/bicyclist from automotive traffic.

By April, the contractor will be completing the access road around the site, and moving the work zone into other locations of the Husky Stadium parking lot.

Construction will continue over the next six years with passenger service scheduled to begin in 2016.

Parts of Burke-Gilman Trail and Montlake Blvd Closed Starting Today

Starting tomorrow through January 3rd, there will be some areas of the Burke-Gilman Trail and Montlake Boulevard that will be closed.

This is for preliminary work by Sound Transit to provide power to the future U of W light rail station (pictured) and is part of the University Link 3.15-mile extension of light rail from downtown to the UW.

"Sound Transit’s contractor will install the infrastructure for an electrical ductbank (under Montlake Boulevard) that will provide power to the UW Station construction site and ultimately additional high voltage service to the University of Washington campus.," says the Sound Transit website.

This work will be done at night to minimize the impact to traffic on Montlake Boulevard and is also scheduled during UW’s winter break to minimize impacts on Burke-Gilman trail users.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane in either direction and pedestrian and bicycle traffic along the Burke Gilman Trail (BGT) will be re-routed for a short distance at the south end of the UW campus.
