LEAP Fundraiser For Neighborhood Emergency HUB

Laurelhurst Community Club's Laurelhurst Earthquake Action Preparedness (LEAP), a grassroots organization started by Laurelhurst residents is raising funds to go towards an emergency HUB at neighborhood St. Stephens Church.

LEAP is announcing a campaign to raise $15,000 to build and equip a communications HUB at St. Stephen’s Church in September. It will be activated as “communication central” in times when Laurelhurst is isolated from services (a major emergency such as an earthquake or other catastrophe.) Volunteers will connect Laurelhurst with other neighborhoods and the City via ham radio. The HUB is a place where information can be shared; for example: the status of nearby bridges and the airport; local grocery stores which are open; missing persons or pets.  

LEAP’s fundraising goal is $15,000. $10 buys a hard hat; $20 - outdoor battery lantern; $50 - laminated neighborhood maps; $120 - whiteboards for messages: $250 - tent to shelter radio equipment and operators. $1,200 buys the generator.We hope to break ground before the end of they year. 

Assisted by over 70 cluster captains, LEAP has organized Laurelhurst into clusters of neighbors who are preparing to cooperate during a crisis.

Tomorrow Earthquake Preparedness Workshop

Tomorrow at 7pm, Laurelhurst Community Club's Laurelhurst Earthquake Action Preparedness (LEAP), a grassroots organization started by Laurelhurst residents, is holding a special event Earthquake Emergency Preparedness at the Laurelhurst Community Center.

Are your Ready if Disaster Hits? Come learn what earthquake emergency preparedness is all about.  

Please join LEAP and our partners from the University of Washington's Department of Urban Design and Planning for a fun, hands-on community resilience workshop.  

This unique event will offer to us and our neighbors the opportunity to learn how Laurelhurst can best respond immediately following an emergency — connect, assist, ask for help. This workshop is meant to encourage connectivity through games and hands-on exercises, explore ways of finding resources and help in the neighborhood, and discuss community-wide network strategies.  

There are three issues in being prepared for a major earthquake: knowing how to be best prepared within your own household, knowing where to get help from your local community in an emergency, and if you are fortunate, how to help your neighbors who are in trouble.   

Some of the materials provided are essential for you and your family's preparedness. Learn how to prepare, how to be safe and how to use the Help/OK sign. Support your neighborhood response team, LEAP. Sign up to be a block captain and/or provide vital information to allow LEAP to better support you and family (pets, too).

LEAP's mission is to save lives, reduce injuries and strengthen the community’s resilience.

The group is also forming organizing clusters and cluster/block captains, of which over 30%have already signed up. The goal of the captains is to blocks in the neighborhood to be organized in preparation for an earthquake or other catastrophic event, that will help with the neighborhoods' resilience.

LEAP has divided the neighborhood into clusters which roughly align with blocks and consist of about 20 houses each. To find out your cluster information contact lccearthquake@outlook.com.

The first days or weeks it will be up to all of us to be prepared. The day after a major earthquake is not the time to try to figure out how to survive in Laurelhurst. Once Laurelhurst is organized it will have less effort to maintain.  

LEAP is run by your neighborhood volunteers and we are working towards emergency communications, first responders, setting up triage areas, gathering places, community hubs and so much more. Everyone needs to understand how to organize their own household and where to help and get help when the big one hits.

Emergency Hub Established In Neighborhood

Laurelhurst Community Club (LCC) published this information in their recent newsletter:

LEAP: Emergency Hub Established in Laurelhurst 

John Temple, LEAP leader, reports that St. Stephen’s front lawn is now our neighborhood meeting place following a devastating earthquake or other major catastrophe. St. Stephens also agreed to put the storage container to equip our new HUB with communications gear on their property.  

We now need to buy that storage POD and all its contents. Things such as: Short wave and GRMS radios, large antenna, large batteries, inverter, generator, enclosed tents, chairs, computer, printer, display boards, hard hats, vests, tools, table, the container itself, and so much more. These emergency support items will cost about $20,000. It is time to donate to your own community’s preparedness and resilience.  

The next closest operational networked HUBs are about five miles away in Victory Heights or Lake City. We would have to send runners there for communications needs. And, they will be busy with their own needs.  

To reach $20,000, we need $200 from just 100 people. Or, $12 from each and every household in Laurelhurst. Don’t just let other people do this. Be those other people.

The sooner we hit the goal, the sooner we can get the HUB ready. We cannot predict an earthquake, we can only prepare. John Temple will post on NextDoor as we reach goal increments of $5,000 from this funding request.

Wednesday at 7pm, Laurelhurst Community Club's Laurelhurst Earthquake Action Preparedness (LEAP) is holding a special event called Disaster Preparedness: The Basics" at the Laurelhurst Community Center.

Carl Leon from the City's Office of Emergency Management, will provide an overview of the hazards that can impact Seattle, and steps that individuals and families can take to become more prepared to deal with them. This includes guidance on how to develop a disaster plan, build a disaster supply kit, and organize with your neighbors to become better prepared.  

The presentation also provides an overview of other OEM efforts including the SNAP program, Community Emergency Hubs, and the City's new alert and notification system, Alert Seattle.

Saturday Free "Stop the Bleed" Class At Community Center And Neighborhood Cluster Captains Needed

Saturday from 12:30-2pm, Laurelhurst Earthquake Action Preparedness (LEAP), is having a free special class in coordination with the national Stop the Bleed Day, a national awareness campaign launched by the White House that encourages citizens to become trained, equipped, and educated to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. 

LEAP, s a grassroots organization started by Laurelhurst residents, to prepare the neighborhood for disaster  has organized doctors to present in order to educate residents on how to be more prepared to help save lives, be prepared, learn how to care for and respond to bleeding injuries in an emergency and identify potentially fatal bleeding and how to stop it.   Table groups will work with mannequins to practice stuffing a wound and using a tourniquet.

John Temple, the founder of LEAP, and also LCC Trustee, said:
Simply said, CPR saves lives by keeping the heart pumping and Stop the Bleed saves lives by not letting a victim bleed out. A person can bleed to death in just three to five minutes. With training, a life can be saved by those that attend this class. Seattle leads the nation in CPR, now let’s lead in residents knowing how to Stop the Bleed!
