The third annual Compost Days, a region-wide campaign to thank residents for diverting 350,000 tons of food and yard waste from landfills last year, is underway, sponsored by Seattle Public Utilities, King County Solid Waste Division and Cedar Grove Composting and Waste Management.
Until April 15th, you can participate in in a region-wide scavenger hunt to find the The Compostable Apple mascot, Corey, whose secret codes are on posters at 45 retail locations in Seattle, King and Snohomish Counties.
Those who find Corey and enter the code will win a free bag of compost redeemable at participating retail locations, the closest one being City People's (5440 Sand Point Way NE), and a chance to participate in one of three Big Dig events and dig through 15-yard pile of compost for over $1,000 in buried treasures donated by Fred Meyer and McLendon Hardware, including a $500 shopping spree.
You can also get a free bag of compost by going to Cedar Grove’s website and sign up by filling out all fields, and receive a coupon redeemable only at Cedar Grove landscape centers. And from that same page, the free Compost Coupon link, you can then sign up for more coupons.
About one-third of the garbage created by residents in King County is made up of compostable food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste and all of it is compostable in the curbside food and yard waste cans.
Tim Croll, Solid Waste Director with Seattle Public Utilities, said:
Puget Sound residents prevented more than 350,000 tons of organic material from being sent to the landfill last year, by having their food scraps and yard debris collected for composting. That’s equivalent to eliminating a 100 mile-long train full of garbage from being sent to the landfill. Thanks to their efforts, we are keeping gardens, yards and parks in our communities green and healthy.
