NE Seattle Tool Library Grand Opening On Saturday

The NE Seattle Tool Library (2415 NE 80^th Street),a community-led project to provide free access to a wide range of tools, training, and resources including advice,  will have its grand opening on Saturday from 10-2pm.

The event will include new member registrations, speeches, announcement of the next winner of Cleanscapes Waste reduction award, tool lending and demonstration on how to use the tool library.  

The website says about the Tool Library, along with information from Ceclia, one of the Co-Chairs of the Library told us:

By provding this unique service of actually reserving a tool and checking it out to use for a specified amount of time,  the Tool Library aims to inspire its community to participate in community projects, such as park restorations, and pursue sustainability through fun projects like backyard gardens, home energy improvements, and waterr harvesting.

Anyone over 18 is welcome to use The NE Seattle Tool Library, whether you live in NE Seattle or anywhere else in the region. Members are just required to fill out a membership application and a liability waiver as well as present two forms of ID to Tool Library staff.  Membership is $40 yearly or whatever one can afford, but it is not mandatory.

The NE Seattle Tool Library is a project of Sustainable NE Seattle and is supported by a grant from the Cleanscapes Waste Reduction Award Program, the generosity of the building’s owner, North Seattle Friends Church, and technical advice and support from the great folks at West Seattle Tool Library.

The program is similar to the Phinney Ridge tool library that has been in existence for over 20 years

Green Wine Tasting Tonight at Laurelhurst Wine Merchants And Information On Cork ReHarvest/Cleanscapes Neighborhood Challenge

 

 
Laurelhurst Wines Merchants, (3711 Ne 45th Street) behind Jak's Grill, is having a Green Wine tasting party tonight from 5-7pm in honor of St Patty's Day.
 
Offered will be  'green' wines' with no food coloring.  The wines are produced using sustainable, organic or biodynamic practices. Some of the wines are shown in the picture above.
 
Laurelhurst Wines offers free tastings every Thursday evening from 5-7 pm and the details are posted on ther website.
 
Next week the tasting features winemaker Matt Rawn of Two Mountain Winery.
 
The store has teamed up with Strom Peterson, owner of the Resident Cheesemonger in Edmonds, to offer a selection of fine cheeses.

Laurelhurst Wine Merchants opened in the begninning of December in the space previously held by Island Video, which went out of business. It is owned by Richard and Linda Chapman, who grew to love wine during their travels around the world.  Janet Sauser, the store manager, is an ISG accredited sommelier and has been a part of the wine scene in the Seattle area for a number of years.
 
Laurelhurst Wine Merchants is partnering with the Laurelhurst Community Club to recycle corks, as part of the Cork ReHarvest program, in an effort to collect used corks and have them  brought back to regional distribution centers on trucks that would normally be going back empty and thus keeping them out of landfills.  Some of the uses of cork after recycling have been for floor tiles and consumer and industrical products.

The Cork ReHarvest program is part of the  Cleanscapes Second Annual Neighborhood Waste Reduction Rewards competition in which Cleanscapes is challenging residents and neighborhoods to reduce their waste. The CleanScapes residential collection day that reduces greatest percentage of all waste between Fall 2010 and Fall 2011 wins.  The reward is a $50,000 community project built in the winning neighborhood and also maintained by CleanScapes. So sign up to receive tips on redusing, reusing and recycling here.

And drop of your used corks at Laurelhurst Wine Merchants. Also partipating in the Cork ReHarvest program is University Wines, (5436 Sand Point Way), a small specialty shop that imports direct from France. It is owned by Gordon McIntosh who has been buying  wines in France for the last thirty-five years. He also carries a selection of Washington, Italian, Spanish, and Argentina wines. And has free tasting every Saturday.
