Burke-Gilman Trail Repairs Underway

Seattle Parks and Recreation published this information:

Seattle Parks and Recreation begins work on 39 sections of the Burke-Gilman Trail in northeast Seattle

Seattle Parks and Recreation(SPR) is working on repaving 39 sections on the Burke-Gilman Trail in northeast this month.
The work will take place between 30th Avenue NE and the King County/Seattle border near NE 145th St. Work is scheduled to be completed by late summer.
This project will repair sections of the trail, remove areas of asphalt in disrepair, remove invasive roots that are causing upheaval, and replace those sections with new asphalt. Additionally, with funding from the Seattle Department of Transportation(SDOT) bollards at 24 intersections along the trail will be removed and sections impacted by bollard removal will be paved. The contractor will work on one section at a time, from southwest to northeast to reduce the impact to trail users.
Cyclists and pedestrians will be detoured around the construction area onto side streets.

For more information, go here.

Give City Your Input On Regional Trails

King County Parks is seeking the public's input on the Burke Gilman and other regional trails:

Parks Header - RTS
Trails_survey
Tell us about regional trails.
Do you use them? If not, why not? What do you like about them? How could they be better?
We want to hear about your experience on our regional trails – take this four-minute survey to help us understand how we can improve regional trails in the future.
Regional trails are those wide, paved trails or hard gravel paths with gentle grades, such as the Burke-Gilman, Sammamish River, Interurban, Green River and Cedar River Trails.
Complete the survey and be entered in a drawing for the chance to win two nights in a yurt at Tolt-MacDonald Park. Just include your email address at the end of the survey.
The survey will be open until Friday, Oct 5th.

Burke Gilman Trail Repairs Underway Near Metropolitan Market

Seattle Parks and Recreation has begun repairs on the first of thirteen sections of the Burke-Gilman Trail in northeast Seattle.

The trail is closed between 40th Avenue NE, by Metropolitan Market, all the way to NE 65th Street, from 7:30am-4:30pm weekdays. Cyclists and pedestrians are detoured around the construction area onto side streets, as shown here.
Sections of the trail are being removed, including areas of asphalt in disrepair, invasive roots that are causing upheaval and replacing those sections with new asphalt.

The entire repair area stretches up to Fairway Estates, just north of Magnuson Park. Contractors are working on one section at a time, from southwest to northeast to reduce disruptions to trail users.

Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will also be working in this same area of the trail to remove bollards/bollard plates and re-pave those sections.

Trail sections were determined by 2015 condition-assessment work done in partnership  with SDOT and reconfirmed in the spring. $250,000 was provided in funding by the Seattle Park District for the trail improvement project.
For more information go here.

Burke-Gilman Trail Repairs Underway Through Early 2017

Seattle Parks and Recreation recently sent out this notice:

Seattle Parks and Recreation begins repairs on Burke-Gilman Trail

Repairs to five sections of the Burke-Gilman Trail that runs through the University District will begin on Monday, Nov. 7. Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) awarded the construction contract for repairs to Westwater Construction. Work is scheduled to be completed in early 2017.
This project will repair sections of the trail, remove areas of asphalt in disrepair, remove invasive roots that are causing upheaval, and replace those sections with new asphalt. Trail sections were determined by 2015 condition-assessment work done in collaboration with Seattle Department of Transportation.
Cyclists and pedestrians will be detoured around the construction area onto side streets. The contractor will work on one section at a time, from east to west, to reduce the impact to trail users.

SPR will also perform small asphalt repairs on the Burke-Gilman Trail in November between Gas Works Park (Meridian Ave. N) and the I-5 bridge, and may require cyclists to dismount and walk around repair work (no detour route will be required).

The Seattle Park District provides $500,000 in funding for this Burke-Gilman Trail improvement project. Approved by voters in 2014, the Seattle Park District provides more than $47 million a year in long-term funding for Seattle Parks and Recreation including maintenance of parklands and facilities, operation of community centers and recreation programs, and development of new neighborhood parks on previously acquired sites.

For more information and detour routes, go here.

Burke Gilman Trail Repair Work Underway

SDOT (Seattle Department of Transportation) and Seattle Parks Department are  repairing and repaving portions the Burke Gilman Trail this month from 40th Avenue NE to NE 145th Street.

SDOT says that bicyclists may need to dismount and walk on soft shoulders of the trail for short distances. There will be parallel detour routes at some locations.

This work is part of SDOT’s implementation of the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan Update and funded by the Bridging the Gap levy approved by Seattle voters.

Help With Sprucing Up Nearby Section Of Burke-Gilman Trail On "Green Seattle Day" Saturday

The 10th annual Green Seattle Day is happening on Saturday starting at 9am at 13 Parks throughout the City.  Hundreds of volunteers will plant thousands of trees and other plants in "that will grow up to be the next generation of our urban forest" a Green Seattle volunteer told the Laurelhurst Blog staff.

The closest meeting place for volunteer work is the Burke-Gilman trail hosted by Friends of the Burke Gilman Trail.  Volunteers will gather at 33rd Avenue NE and NE Blakely, just below the house at 4703 33rd Avenue NE and the trail.

The information given for this specific location is:

Help us plant a newly cleared section of the Burke-Gilman Trail for Green Seattle Day. With your help, we can keep the Emerald City green as it should be. We will be joining hundreds of volunteers all over the city planting trees!
There will be a free Volunteer Lunch after planting at the Rainer Community Center in Columbia City for volunteers from all 14 Green Seattle Day sites. A little closer to the trail, Fremont Brewing is also hosting an after party, discounts for Green Seattle Day volunteers.

Register in advance to ensure enough gloves, shoes, coffee and to get specific directions and more information.

The Green Seattle website says:

This family-friendly planting day is great for all ages, and no experience is necessary. We’ll bring the plants, tools, gloves, coffee, and snacks. You’ll get a great work-out, spend some time outside in a beautiful park, and feel great knowing that you spent the morning doing something good for your community and our urban environment. Bring friends and family with you, or meet new friends as you work together in your neighborhood park.

Dress warmly for the weather – we will be out rain or shine – and wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes that can get dirty and wet. Bring a water bottle and reusable coffee mug if you have them. We will have coffee to fill up, and some snacks to keep you going!

Go here for more information about the Green Seattle Partnership and to see the 13 other Seattle Parks participating in Green Seattle Day.

"We are excited for Green Seattle Day and look forward to volunteers coming out from all over the city to support their neighborhood greenspaces.  Green Seattle Day is a celebration of the forest that makes this the Emerald City. Help us keep it that way," a volunteer with the program said.

The UW Farm has set up a farm stand from 3-5:30pm every Friday on the Burke-Gilman trail near the Mercer Court Apartments, on the corner of Cowlitz and Adams ,  through the end of this month. All proceeds go towards furthering the Farm's outreach and mission.

The information says:

Get your fill of fresh, hyper-local lettuce, kale, chard, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, carrots, beets, zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, turnips, radishes, beans, tomatillos, herbs (parsley, sage, rosemary, oregano, thyme, lavender), mustard, garlic and more!

The UW Farm is a campus center for the practice and study of urban agriculture and sustainability. It is an educational, community-oriented resource for people who want to learn about building productive and sustainable urban landscapes.
