Cara, Laurelhurst Community Center Recreation Coordinator, is starting a "Book Nook" on the lower level of the Community Center and is seeking book donations and hopes to have it ready for use on November 1st.

The Laurelhurst Community Center (4554 NE 41st Street) is in the process of putting together a Little Library Book Nook for kids ages 0-5 to be located in the downstairs lobby in a cozy area for young kids and their grownups to enjoy reading together.
The idea was suggested by a patron on our online survey and staff decided that it was a nice idea to serve the community.
There is a lot of open space downstairs where it is quiet as well as comfortable furniture, such as couches, chairs and childrens' tables and “bistro” style table/chairs. Lighting will be added to make the space brighter and a cozy atmosphere.
There will be a self-serve Keurig coffee cart and small snacks available for purchase at the front desk.
We are currently collecting books so that we can have a nice collection available for families to read and even swap out with books they would like to donate. Families can bring a book and take a book home similar to the little library’s around town and will be on the honor system.
Currently, there is a small basket of books available by the piano still but we will condense them into the Book Nook downstairs. Kids who generally look at the books in the lobby are either waiting for a parent to register at the desk or waiting for a sibling in a program. Families can continue to read upstairs by the piano.
The Book Nook is funded through donations of books from the community and by the Laurelhurst Advisory Council and will be available once we have received and/or purchased enough supplies for it to begin.
If you have a book or two that you would like to donate to help us get this free program off the ground, please drop them off from 9-2pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays or 9-8pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.
