Laurelhurst Resident's Business, Satsuma Designs, To Be Part of Eco-Chic Event Tomorrow

One of our readers, Jennifer Porter, who lives in the neighborhood and also owns Satsuma Designs, sent us email to let us know about a cool event happening this Saturday called Eco-Chic Expo in neighboring Ravenna at the Community Center.

Her company will be one of 15 local companies, including Theo Chocolates, giving demos and workshops that showcase adding "eco" to everday as Jennifer says.

And Jennifer's company, Satsuma Designs, creates all natural gifts and gear for baby and for home. The items are made in Seattle and sold around the world to "comfort and clothe babies of all ages," the website says.

Jennifer tells us that every package is gift wrapped and 5% of every purchase supports St. Joseph’s Baby Corner where they’re ‘changing the world one diaper at a time.’

And you can check out her products right down the street in the University Village at Village Maternity.

On top of running her companny, she also writes a blog called Baby Grows Green with a tag line "Sustainable living from cradle to cradle."

And as for Laurelhurst she says: " For a little more color, I’m a Laurelhurst resident, love the neighborhood and the community feeling of our retailers on 45th. My husband hits Coffee Crew every morning and Sally at Baker’s is the best! We’re so excited to welcome Chloe to the ‘hood too. Does Bill the Butcher sell sandwiches? He should!"

More from the Satsuma Company website:

At Satsuma Designs we love babies! It's why we do what we do. Every design in our collection, business decision, daily detail and inspiration comes from our mission to create cozy, all natural and useful products for little ones.

We started the business to serve moms, dads, care givers and others searching for eco-friendly, yet elegant and practical gifts for babies. We leaped at the opportunity to connect our evolving sensitivity to a greener lifestyle not only for our own family, but every family. That's why Satsuma Designs was born.

Hi Laurelhurst neighbor,

First, thanks so much for picking up the reins on the neighborhood blog. My husband and I really appreciate your efforts.

Second, I’m writing with some exciting news from Seattle’s sustainability community. May 1st marks the first Eco-Chic Expo: an interactive green lifestyle event that will showcase over 15 local companies on hand to perform demonstrations, mini-workshops and offer products to show that adding an ‘eco’ to everyday activities can be easy, fun, and fashion forward.

A sampling of exhibitors includes established and emerging sustainable brands: Theo’s Chocolate, Tread Light Gifts, NEST, A Greener Kitchen, Eat Your Yard, Satsuma Designs, and more.

Many thanks!

Eco-Chic Expo Blooms this May Day in Seattle

Interactive Green Lifestyle Event Debuts to Share Tips and Tricks to Going Green

Seattle, WA (April 1, 2010) - Eco-Chic Expo: an interactive green lifestyle event launches May 1st to prove that going green is more stylish and easier than some think. Showcasing more than 15 local companies in every lifestyle category, Eco-Chic Expo exhibitors will entertain and educate guests of this free event about how to live more sustainably. The latest harvest from three local, eco-friendly companies – Tread Light Gifts, mamaswap.com and Satsuma Designs - the Eco-Chic Expo will be held Saturday, May 1st at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center from 10a-2p.

“Going green isn’t all about having a chicken coop and composting, although those are great ways to live sustainably! We want to share with our community that a greener life can be easy, fun, even fashionable,” quips Tracy Anderson, Eco-Chic Co-founder and CEO of Tread Light Gifts. Among other demonstrations and interactive how-tos, guests can learn how to create a landscape to feed a family, make organic paper for writing and wrapping, mix up non-toxic, all natural cleaning products, enjoy natural spa treatments and complimentary brow and lip sugaring, design green interior spaces, fashion organic clothing and jewelry, swap gently used kids clothing and gear, and enjoy an Eco-Chic Expo exclusive, a Dante Inferno’s Eco-Dog!

Designed to connect community with accessible, fun ways to live a greener life, event organizers reached out to local lifestyle brands known for their commitment to sustainability. “At thinknow, we believe sustainability or 'being green' is not a single effort or one-time fashion statement. It’s a lifestyle, a community ethos and a plan for the world's future. The Eco-Chic Expo presents an excellent platform to participate in a premiere eco-community effort to inform and inspire a great local audience,” shares Becky Ellis, exhibitor and eco-friendly jewelry designer.

“There are so many levels of green and just as many ways to go green. Being green can be as simple as remembering your mom’s voice reminding you turn off the lights when you leave a room or rinse out that Ziploc bag to use again,” laughs Sarah Bell, Eco-Chic Co-Founder and CEO of mamaswap.com, an online consignment community for families.

Bell will moderate two family gear swaps at 11a and 1p where gently used, durable and beautiful brands will be passed on to greener pastures. Guests planning to swap their gently used baby and children’s items are invited to visit mamaswap.com to register for the swaps.
