Celebrate Earth Day at Sun Park on Saturday

The anniversary of the 40th Annual Earth Day is approaching on April 22nd.

And the folks from Sun Park invite you to a neighborhood celebration this Saturday from 10-noon.

In March 2007, a group of Laurelhurst neighbors and friends, through donations to the Cascade Land Conservancy, purchased the corner lot at NE 47th and 47th Avenue NE to preserve a small open space from development. You can learn more here.

Originally there was a large 19 20's Bungalow style house on this corner property. A developer divided the lot in three parcels and 2 houses were built on 2 of the lots. The Sun Park folks, along with many in the community, attended a meeting along with City representatives, to save the third parcel from being developed.

And they did and turned it into a beautiful pocket park.

The park is named for Saving Urban Nature. Dixie Park and Jean Amick, Laurelhurst residents, are co-chairs for the Sun Park Committee.

The invitation says:

What better way to celebrate Earth Day 2010 than to visit your community park?

Come see the native plant identification signs with easy to read information on the plant's etymology and uses by early native populations.

Or stop by and join us to:
*share a cup of coffee
*cheer on volunteers spreading mulch
*drop a donation in the flower pot
*but a Metropolitan Market gift card

Sun Park
A small corner or reclaimed urban nature
A breathing room, a tranquil open space
A place for learning, a place to sit and reflect!

Stop by and see all the beautiful work that has been done and is still going on to maintain this gem in our neighborhood.

Sun Park has "Weed and Sweep Work Brigade Parties" the second Saturday of each month from 10-noon.
