Lots of rain and fallen leaves lead to flooding on many city streets and the Seattle Public Utilities is looking for volunteers to join their Adopt-a-Drain program, in partnership with their Adopt-a-Street Program.
"Unfortunately, our full time drainage crews cannot keep up with the thousands of storm drains that need extra maintenance this time of year. That’s where you come in! Removing dirt, silt and debris from the top of the drain helps prevent flooding and diverts pollutants from streams, creeks and other natural waterways," says the SPU website.
SPU will lend free cleaning supplies to help keep your neighborhood drains clear of debris. The supplies includes rakes, bags, gloves, shovels, brooms, dustpans and more.
You can pick them up this Saturday or next from 9am to 12pm at Seattle Public Utilities’ warehouse at 3633 E. Marginal Way South.
Other pick-up times are October 28-29 from 10am to 1pm at Seattle Municipal Tower in downtown Seattle (on 6th Ave between Columbia St and Cherry St.)
You can also call 206-684-7647 to sign up and reserve your supplies or email adoptadrain@seattle.gov.
Help keep drains clear of debris and keep the rain water flowing on our neighborhood streets.
