Pick Up After Your Dogs Reader Requests, City Can Impose Fines

We received this email from a reader urging dog owners to pick up after their dogs:

I would like to call attention to the fact that folks in Laurelhurst seem to be more lax than usual about picking up after their dogs.  Walk the average block in the neighborhood and one can find numerous examples of un-picked-up dog poop.

Once you start paying attention to it, it is really astounding.  It would sure be nice to have a neighborhood where folks could confidently walk on a strip of lawn at night or during the day without scanning the ground to avoid a gross mess.

Please post a reminder for folks to be more responsible.

The City of Seattle imposes fines if feces are not picked up.  Here is a related list of  City Municpal Codes and corresponding violations:

Offenses Related to Safety and Sanitation
$109 Allowing accumulation of fecesSMC 9.25.082 (A)
$54 Not removing feces from another’s propertySMC 9.25.082 (B)
$54 Not having equipment to remove fecesSMC 9.25.082 (C)

Thank you so much for posting this request to dog owners. I have been picking up dog feces off my grass strip on average 7-10 times a week. I am a dog owner myself, and I am surprised that otherwise responsible people behave in this way. I finally got fed up and put stakes with plastic gardening tape around my grass strips as a temporary measure. I am considering planting rose bushes or simply bricking over my grass strips because of this problem. Hopefully your reminder will help. Thanks again.

I'm sure a lot of the problem is owners allowing their dogs to roam free. I see free roaming dogs nearly daily.

People are not picking up their dogs’ poop at Talaris either, especially along the southwest-side road into Talaris from NE 41st.

The poop contains harmful bacteria that can get into the nearby water of Yesler Swamp and Union Bay, killing fish (salmon spawn) and other wildlife.

In addition, the poop is unsightly and makes us look like poor neighbors. Please do your part!
